Good Morning!

I recently changed my gears on my 2013 Ram 1500 QC Laramie from 3.21 to 3.92.

The dealer said that FCA has stopped allowing them to change the ratio configured on the truck to anything other than what the truck was originally built with. They suggested an aftermarket programmer.

I'm wondering what is out there to do this. I don't want to mess with anything else, and am not looking to do any tuning. Just adjust the axle ratio. Is there an app that I can get for my phone and a plug that will go into the ODB2?

Are there any disadvantages to changing the gear ratio? I currently have a 2016 with the Hemi but the ratio is at 3.21, so not the best for towing. From what I can see it is the same transmission model that has the 3.91 and 3.55 ratios.

Thanks!

Would I be better off with the OBDLink MX or MX+?

The only benefit to the MX+ is that you can use it with iOS devices as a code reader/gauge, but AlfaOBD only works on Android. My MX+ often sets CAN error codes so I have to follow it up with a code clear. I tested a friends MX and it doesn't have the same behavior so I'd lean towards just getting an MX.

Unloaded you might get less mpg as you are Turing higher RPM. May actually get better mileage if you have taller than stock tires with the lower gears. Just depends on where you are sitting in the power band.

I don’t understand what programming needs to be changed with gears. All the sensors are downstream of gears.

^^^^^^^^

What he said. The sensors are at the wheels so you don’t HAVE to update the BCM for a gear change. Not a bad idea to do it but it’s not mandatory. Your speedo will be unaffected.
