When I purchased my 2019 RAM 1500 Classic two months ago, one of the conditions was that the dealer would activate the Navigation on the 8.4 as I wanted to shed the Garmin DriveSmart 61 that I was using in my previous 2008 RAM.

It turns out that they could not activate the Navigation in the 8.4 that is installed in the truck. They refunded me $1K, and I installed the Garmin in the new truck. I am very familiar with the Garmin, and like that I can plan routes on my computer and upload them into the Garmin.

I am currently in Moses Lake, WA after driving up here from the Phoenix area, and used both the Garmin and Android Auto on the trip.

I did find it difficult to add "all" the fuel stops (waypoints) in Android Auto, so just selected the next leg of the trip at each stop.

The routing and predictions were identical between the Garmin and Android Auto.

I was initially concerned about the Data Usage on my Cell using Android Auto (I'm on a 3GB/month plan), but have found that navigating with Android Auto uses relatively little data (.5 GB in the past 7 days on the road).

Bottom line is that I think you will enjoy Android Auto, when/if there is a way to activate it on your 8.4

There is no way to add Android Auto/Car Play support to your current 8.4, you would need to upgrade the radio to a UAS(non-Nav) or UAQ(built in navigation) radio from an '18 model year truck.
There is an entire thread on how to: https://www.ramforum.com/threads/how-to-install-a-2018-4c-uaq-uas-radio-in-2013-2017-ram.116140/

With what UAS radio in your truck there is no way to add the built in navigation like the previous versions of the 8.4. You would need to upgrade your to an UAQ version. It will be a direct swap, Plug-N--Play. You might even be able to sell your current 8.4 to @15bighorn to defray the cost of the upgrade.
