..... I took a trip through the mountains and still saw temps of 240-245 on the mountain climbs but would quickly fall to the 220's on the down hill....

Wow! 240-245 would freak me right out. Were you towing?

The 6.4's run alot hotter oil temps then the 5.7's because of the piston squirters. They use an oil spray to cool the piston and upper rod bearing, but that also puts more heat into the oil.

Nope. Just mountain climbs. 7% plus inclines and I was pushing it some to see how hot the temps would get.

The engine requires 0w40 so at least it's thicker when hot versus the 5w20 the 5.7 uses.

Nice to hear on the CEL's.

RE: heat - I put in a 180* stat and it knocked down coolant and oil temps quite a bit. Normal ECT (engine coolant temp) cruise is now ~185*, and in stop/go traffic it will briefly get up to ~196* then fan/AGS kick in (set in tune to come on at 192*) and ECT quickly drops down under 190*. This also dropped the oil temp down ~20*. My ECT was 30* hotter before this new stat, sometimes going over 230*!!
I am running a 180° tstat and electric fan. The coolant and transmission temps stay right where I want them.

From a stop it feels similar to the 5.7 because going wot just spins my 37's which is shocking. I would have a little spin before but now it's all the way through the gears. However once you get past 60 my response every time is holy ****. It pulls so hard from 60- to however fast you want to go haha. The top end is insane. I have not towed with it yet but other than oil temps this SRT Engine won't have any issue doing it.

If I had to do it over again and money wasn't an issue I would have installed drop in pistons and rods since the crank is forged. That way as wild one mentioned I could drop the 10:9 compression to something in the lower 10:0 range that would give me fuel type options and then just added forced induction in the future. Id consider a supercharger but turbos have always had my heart.
i know what mean i did mmx hot rod crate with big cam long tubes ported 6.4 manifold and bigger throttlebody and 100mph+ comes quick I was also in that same dilemma about wanting to go force induction and I wanted to do a hellcat swap, but they discontinued the motor and I’ve already spent so much money into it that in reality what I have now is plenty for daily if I need more of my life, that’s what I have the car for…

have you dyno yours yet mine made 440whp on 37s

I have not and to be honest probably won't. If I did I would probably go to UMS tuning in Tempe, AZ because they have a hub dyno. 440whp is 5.7 supercharged territory!! Nice numbers. It has plenty of HP for me right now.

I think the next project will be around transmission. Im rwd right now but I want to convert to 4wd using all factory pieces. Aside of the coil bucket modifications to the frame for coilover conversion I think it can be done. But it would help to see someone who has already successfully completed the swap.

I don't know of anybody who's modded a 2X4 frame ,but there's been a couple guys who've bought wrecked 4X4's and swapped the complete frame Doing it that way also gave them all the 4X4 pieces they needed, like diff/transfer case, transfer case to dash wiring etc.

New update. Had another 180 degree tstat fail on me. Taking my son to his basketball game traveling on the freeway coolant temps jumped to 235° before finally coming back down to around 204. Oil temps climbed to the high 240's at 75mph.

Ordered a new 180° tstat from moes since I didn't really have the means to shop around town. They got me one overnight which I was super happy about. I installed my last one a few years ago but I didn't have the means or space at my apartment to do this myself with my work schedule. Took it back to the same place that swapped the engine in since the mechanic was really familiar with the changes.

Got the truck back and noticed a leak the next morning. Ironically it was coolant. Just a few small drips but obviously shouldn't be doing that. Took it back again. A new gasket was used with the tstat but apparently something happened to it so they replaced it again and now all is good.

Now city driving coolant temps stay between 185-195. My tuning turns on the fans at 195 or if the AC is on. Oil temps stay around 212.

Freeway driving coolant is 185 - 204 depending on how hard I drive the truck. Oil temps 220°- 230°

I still want an external oil cooler because of towing. Im positive pulling a trailer will get this engine a lot hotter than I'd like.

Other than that Id still 100% recommend this swap if your looking for close to an extra 100hp and tq. It's a blast to drive and I've yet to wish I did it any differently or went a different route for more power. Having all my mods swap over except for the mopar CAI was the cherry on top.

Hows the milege compare to the original 5.7. I know a few guys who've done the 6.4 swap, and they all claim a noticable increase in their fuel milege with the 6.4,especially if their towing a trailer.

It really depends on the footometer. I normally would see 14 in city and 17-20 on highway with the 5.7. I get those same targets with the 6.4. But self control often evades me and the gas get mashed.

The evic will read higher on the mpgs but it's not accurate. I use my trip meter to gallons filled to determine my actual mileage and the evic is usually generous adding an additional 1 mpg. My calc math will say 14.3 and the evic will be reading 15.3.

I need to source a 32 gallon tank on of these days.

So a little update. Front wheel bearings died again. Truck is at 179,000 miles and this is the second set of front wheel bearings. You'll know your bearings are toast with the constant vibration in the steering wheel. Factory ones lasted 86,0000 miles so Timken is on par with oem for those on the fence with which brand to go with. Im sure the 37s make them wear out faster but that's the cost of running big tires.

Rear diff cover decided to leak. Aftermarket cover by aFe is what's installed but the gasket sealer used looked squished out basically. Pulled that off, cleaned up the mating surface and refilled with fresh aFe diff oil 75w-140

Thanks for the update. ;) Bigger tires and/or lift will absolutely put extra strain on ALL front end components.

Engine swap all still good? Any regrets with the bigger motor????

Engine swap is loving life. True test will be Emission testing in Feb of 26th. Right now no CEL's and the light will turn on if an issue arises.

As far as regrets the only one I have is not knowing the engine runs hotter than the 5.7. I did add the water to oil factory cooler that does do a good job if not driving faster than 75mph or towing. (Haven't towed yet) but mountain climbs of 7% grade will get the oil to 240 plus.

I still haven't done the external cooler. (My kids have been expensive this year) but when I do I highly recommend the thermostat being at 212. Anything lower and you'll overcool the oil. If I'm not pushing the truck the oil will stay below 210 with the factory cooler.

What does make me happy was most of my 5.7 mods transferring over. The mopar intake didn't because of the 5.7 intake manifold versus the 6.4 truck manifold. The long tubes , Efan, hellcat TB, and Diablo i3 all worked on new engine. Of course I did need a retune on the 6.4L injectors as well as a Trans tune.

If I had to do it over again and wanted a supercharged engine I could have went with the 6.2 long block but tbh that project was not in my budget.

With a 180 t-stat the wifes 6.4 Challenger would run right around 200 to 205 oil temps at 70 mph on a 80F day,and i think those are better oil temps for a 6.4 then 212+. Helps keep the cam / lifters and springs a bit cooler, and gives a bit thicker oil film on the lobes. The 185 is the one i'd run,as the 205 is a bit hot before it hits full flow at 221

Mishimoto also has a nice high flow oil cooler thermostat.

Thank you for the insight. What gives me pause is city driving stays cool with factory cooler. Driving 65mph or slower stays under 210°. The time I need this external cooler is when I'm beating on it with multiple WOT pulls or driving 75+ on the Autobahn Arizona loop 101.

I'll think on it more and report back with what I end up with. The activation temp of 200 with full flow at 221 is what I have my eye on
