I bought the 6.4 partly because it runs on 87 octane gas. The threads about tuners/programmers talk about how much difference the more extreme tunes (Hemifever, premium fuel tunes) make as compared to stock, not about the mild tunes. I want a tuner for adjusting the tire pressure monitor levels, turning off MDS, and as a code reader but it probably isn't worth so much money unless the mild tune (87 octane) makes at least some increase to the low end (1500-2500 rpm) torque and/or the throttle response. I would love it to have a little more grunt for pulling up hills without having to downshift.

Has anyone tried the 87 octane tune on a 6.4L? Would I feel anything different as compared to stock? Any noticeable difference in low end torque? Any noticeable difference in throttle response or drivability?

might want to check and make sure there is a tuner compatible with the 6.4 right now. its a new engine. might not have alot of feedback for it yet. i personally am running 87 tune with a DS on my 5.7 with 89 octane and wow. there are alot of people that bag on canned tunes but i noticed a difference right away. real world feedback....before the tune on my 09 and running with GAS Savr light on i would start to very lightly accelerate lets say 35 to 40 the light would turn off. now i can accelerate with the gas savr light on from 35 to 50. tried it a couple times just to be sure that i wasnt fooling myself. not so sure about mpg's yet cuz i like the power.

Hemifever makes a BIG difference over canned DS tunes. I bought my DS strictly for the HF tunes.

No offense, the DS canned tunes suck. HF tune will put a big smile on your face. :)

Ok, I realize my "tweeker" joke was out of place... ;)

I currently run 91 octane hemifever tune (would love 93 but not available in cali)

Before the DS I had a Bullydog, which had good canned tunes, but when I went to DS tunes I was disappointed until I loaded the HF tune.:Rock on:

It's important to run the same octane gas as the tune.

running 89 on a 87 tune will only help that "tune" perform to its full potential based upon other factors such as high outside air temperature, engine variances, etc. the 89 will take up that slack and allow the 87 tune to run best with out retarding timing from knock.

also for ME, it was very noticable since it was my first tuner for my truck that i have run. i havnt ran any other tuners so i cant compare this tuner to that tuner. but in the future i am planning on running a hemi fever tune.

That's very true.
I should have worded my post different. I meant to caution against using a lower octane than the tune.
Higher octane with a lower tune is a bonus. :)

I don't have any answers yet but here is my experience so far.

1. I got the inTune tuner at about 12:00 today

2. I hooked it up to my computer to update it. It did something on the screen but nothing happened on the unit. I tried it again. I called Diablo tech support and their only answer was they could remotely connect to my computer to look at it. I don't think so!

3. I tried it again and again and again. I tried it on another computer. I went back to the first computer and the unit finally updated. Or at least I hope it did it correctly. I had to unplug it several times when it appeared locked up the previous times so I don't know if it is okay or not.

4. I tried updating it one more time just to be sure. It said it was updated.

5. I took it to my truck and plugged it in. After a few screens it said it needed to update some "calibration" file and it needed to be hooked up to a computer again. So I had to unplug and go back to my computer.

6. Plugged it in and ran the software on my computer and it said it had a calibration update.

7. Two and a half hours into this and I still have not put a tune on my truck

8. Went back to my truck. Got as far as "tune my vehicle". It looked like it was writing this new calibration software to my truck and it took about 20 minutes to do so. This concerns me because it did not do a backup of the original first. Then it did a backup of the original settings. Another 20 minutes. Then it started writing 'Stage 1" (the selected tune??) to my truck before asking me if I wanted to include any modifications. Another 20 minutes. Then it needed to write "Stage 2". Another 20 minutes.

9. Three hours and 45 minutes into it and I finally have a new tune in it (the 87 octane tune) but not the final one I want because it didn't ask me about modifying the tune the first time. Now that it is rush "hour" here (a misnomer if I ever heard one), I won't be able to try it out for a few hours except around my neighborhood.

10. I am not sure if there is much difference at 0-30 mph taking it easy. I didn't expect much change under those conditions. It is possible it pulls stronger instead of down and upshifting so much. More testing is required to be sure.

11. I decided to install a modified tune. Remember that my BIG things were turning off MDS and setting the TPMS alarm levels way down. THERE IS NO TPMS SETTING as far as I can tell. It is not listed as a setting in the unit and it is not on the list of adjustable parameters on their web page for the 2014 Ram. I could swear it was there before; it was one of the important things I wanted. I called Diablo tech support but they had me on hold for too long so I gave up and hung up. Considering that TPMS was at the TOP of my list of things I wanted, I am pissed off right now.

12. I got in touch with tech support. No TPMS setting. I could swear it was on the list for the 2014 Ram on their web site when I was researching the unit to see if I wanted to buy it. I guess I am stuck with running way too much pressure in my rear tires and having a rougher ride because of it.

So, that's where it stands right now. Four hours of frustration, tech support that didn't solve either of my problems, and the most important thing on my list isn't a feature of the unit. In maybe 4-5 hours traffic will let up and I'll get a chance to try it out on the highway to see if I can feel the tune. It is only the 87 octane tune so I am not expecting a race truck, just better drivability.

I guess it just isn't my day. I waited 5 flipping' hours for traffic to die down but then it started raining. It wasn't too bad for about a mile then the sky opened up. It rained so hard I could barely see the road. Not a good night for a test drive. I couldn't hear the engine over the rain pounding on the roof and I darned sure wasn't going to test the power. It did seem to hold speed better than before, though. Then everyone slowed way down and that was the end of that.
