I am having lifter/cam issues on my 2014 RAM 5.7. Been through the diagnozing to exclude exhaust manifolds. Planning to do the MDS delete (hellcat lifters) and billet cam when replacing parts. I am looking for my best options for MDS delete tune and I saw that Diablo offers both MDS delete and multiple tunes depending on octane in one device.

I am not looking for high rpm power, just a driveable and possibly fuel efficient tune with good low end power.

My question: is Diablo the best solution for this and how do their tunes match with non stock billet cams? Any specific low end cams that are recommended for their tunes?

Any advice is appreciated!

Just get HP instead, very few tuners are still using Diablo, and you'll need a custom tune for any decent aftermarket cam.Get ahold of a couple of the cam outfits like FRP(flying Ryan preformance) / MMX / 797 preformance etc. and talk to them about a cam for your application. Get your trucks weight / gear ratio etc. before you contact them. Also invest in a good A/Fr gauge,as to do a proper custom tune, most tuners will want you to have a way to monitor air/fuel ratio's

If you haven't decided on the cam that you are going to use I have a little input on the cam replacement that I went through. I had the MDS with vvt in a 2013, 1500 5.7 with 8 speed. Instead of going back with the MDS cam I wanted to just delete the MDS system and not get a custom tune. The OEM cam for the 2013 and up 1500 series 5.7 is #53022263AF. That is the factory spec cam with MDS. I installed the Mopar cam #53022314AD which is the OEM spec, non-MDS cam with VVT for the 2500 series 5.7, which did not have the MDS grind. No custom tune needed. I used the Super Chip tuner to delete the MDS in the control module and make a few other changes such as fan control temps. That repair was made in 2019 and the truck has ran perfect since.

I like both suggestions above, from @Wild one and also from @Hydrasport23 .

However, because you specified that, "I am not looking for high rpm power, just a driveable and possibly fuel efficient tune with good low end power.", I am gonna go with @Hydrasport23 and STRONGLY recommend you do the STOCK cam setup. This will make your life a lot easier, and I believe you will be a lot happier by avoiding the hassles (trust me, there can be way more than you would expect) of custom tuning. Plus, I can't tell you how many times I've seen guys swap cams and end up quite unhappy with the result.

If your not looking for sound or crazy perfromance, Moes No tune, Non MDS cam says you get a noticable amount of low end torque. I think the whole kit is around 1500$

I'd look for a cam that makes power down low, no point in putting a high winding cam in an 8000 pound truck

Get some thing that has torque from idle and fall flat at 4500 and you'll be much happier then with a cam that doesn't start building power untill 3500 and needs to be wound to the moon

Thanks for your advice, I plan to do exactly that. Is there a cam out there that performs better on low torque/fuel economy than the Mopar non MDS 53022314AD?
And I have experienced that my OEM cast iron cams suffers from surface flaking and that this is one of the contributors/risks for cam/lifter wear. Aftermarket billet cams are supposed not to suffer from this. Anybody experienced a difference with cast vs billet?

check out TSP stage 1 cam

(om de een of andere reden is TSP niet erg populair hier, ik denk stiekem dat het komt omdat ze een hele grote naam zijn in het hele LS gebeuren)

my engine builder actually suggested this cam for me since i plow with my truck and i need off the line power
i still have a break in tune in my truck, should get properly tuned next week

keep in mind that you will need a tune with just about any cam you can get
(also i dont know if diablo will let you turn off the check engine light for the cam phaser?)

as far as the flaking, it sounds like Ma Mopar went with the lowest bid on who made the cams and thats where the issue came from

but honestly, i dont know

i do know billet (machined from a solid piece) should not wear anywhere near as much as cast metal does

Jay Greene's .5HL cam has a good rep for torque under the curve to.
I don't know how you go about getting ahold of him these days though.

I saw an affordable option from Summit. Their non-MDS stock replacement SUM-5701 for just $315. Anybody experience with those? Are they billet steel?

EDIT:
answer on question from Summit:
Thanks for your question. The entire Summit Pro line of camshafts, including the Pro Hemi cams, are made from 5150 bearing-quality billet steel. This is the same process used for our LS-based camshafts, and I’ve linked that process below.
