Hello everyone, I’m new here and I had my 2013 Ram 1500 Hemi 4x4 do something strange on me yesterday. I put my truck in 4 low to go down this steep hill heading to my shooting range and my truck started free wheeling on me while I was decending the hill. Usually I don’t even have to press the brake and the trucks gearing and engine braking hold it back but yesterday it was like I was in neutral and it’s never done that plus it start making rattle noises coming from the front of the truck. I even had it in the manual mode like I usually do. Mine has th 6 speed auto with the column shifter. Any ideas would be helpful.

On mine I need to be in neutral to go 4 low, it is not a shift on the fly to low. My 2011 was the same way. High is on the fly, but not low. Have you confirmed procedure in your owners manual?

What transfer case is it? BW44-44 or BW44-45
From the given infromation, sounds like it didn't fully engage in 4X4 Low

I shifted into neutral before I went into 4 low. I have the transfer case with 2wd 4lock and 4low.

Sounds like it just didn't shift all the way into 4Low and the feedback thru the drivetrain was sufficient to pop it out of gear. The rattla was the transition from 4L engaged to 4L not engaged.

Did you attempt to engage 4L on an incline? That could have bound it up, giving you feedback in the shifter lever.

How is it now?
Does it work OK?
If so, you might not have a problem at all.

That's the BW44-45 Part-Time transfer case.
It's best to have a slow roll(<5mph) and the transmission in neutral to shift the transfer case into/out of low range.

This under 7-8 mph is what I've always tried to do.
