Hello
New to this forum so hello to you all. I love these forums for all of my cars/trucks/etc. Great source of information for sure. I have a 2008 corvette that needs a great deal of research over on the corvette forums. Its quirky.
I have a beautiful new-to-me 2017 Laramie 5.7 4x4, color black. I bought it used with 11K miles on it at a great price. This is the best truck I've ever owned. Amazing smooth ride. Fast. And the 8-speed transmission is a work of art.
I put approx 10K miles on it and changed the oil per the oil life monitor when it said to; used old fashion dino 5-20 oil because I read that synthetic doesn't allow proper break-in for MDS. Ive used synthetic oil for all my engines and know it is superior and plan to switch next oil change near 30 K miles.
Ok, regarding MDS: As an engineer (soon to retire! I won't care about gas mileage!) I just don't like the idea of an electro-mechanical valve lifter. From a reliability standpoint, it just makes a complicate engine even more so. And like others have noted on this site, ECO mode seems to activate way to early and when my engine is cold. So I've learned from this site (thanks again!) to just click the shifter to keep it in 8, or 7 on my lower speed road commute. (also some cam failures attributed to lifter failure has been reported)
Question: does anyone know if I could be causing any troubles by manually shifting to 8 every time I drive?
And since I don't know exactly how the lifter works, deactivating it might NOT decrease its chance of failure?
Also, if I did program the MDS to never activate with a tuner, would that affect the warranty?
I did pay a couple of grand for extended warranty because these newer vehicles are extremely complicated. The computers are involved with just about everything. I know a BMW mechanic who cannot recommend the newer Beemers because he finds so many electrical issues. And to sell them before the warranty us up. And some issues can't be solved; Thats complicated!
So thanks again for a great site.
Pete
PS: Dumb oil filter location. Maybe its fine in a car? But not in this truck.
