So yesterday I thought my truck felt weird pulling in the driveway.... almost smashed into my wife’s vehicle [emoji2369]. Thought maybe it was just me. This morning I moved my truck out of the driveway and saw a brake pad on the ground?!? Never seen or heard that before. No indication it was bad prior to this

Was it the whole pad? Backer plate and brake material or just the brake material? It’s not unheard of for brakes to crack or split. I’ve never had one fall out though.

I didn’t examine it but looks like a brake pad. Like complete pad lol. I just ordered the power stop brake kit for front and back. It’s their “tow and truck” version [emoji2369]. Hope they’re good

If the brake pad actually fell out that means tour caliper fell off to,.. or it ground down so thin it slipped out.

The brake material falling off the backing plate is not uncommon from corrosion or just a bad bond, but the whole pad not so much.

What do your rotors look like? The soft pedal for a moment may mean it just happened and maybe you just need new pads.

I remember reading on one of the forums I frequent about a couple of OEM pads coming off the backing plates and falling to the ground. I think there was corrosion on the backing plates of the pads

This is what I found.... I didn’t inspect rotors as I can’t really see them through my wheel and I can’t lift my truck with my current jack as it doesn’t lift my truck high enough. Father in law is bringing his over today. Brakes felt fine up until yesterday, however, I don’t drive it much these days and I haven’t towed my bot yet this year so I didn’t sense an issue. Plus, no weird sounds or anything

The ears would have to shear off for the whole pad to drop out, unlikely.
More likely the pad separated.
Either way the caliper pistons went past their travel range & probably damaged the seals.
Don't drive it until you know.

That looks like it rotted off from corrosion. It looks like you had a fair bit of pad left, but also one of your caliper slides is sticking so it's not wearing evenly. Based on the corrosion not surprising. My rear slides get stuck pretty regular from prairie mud and whatever they put on the roads in winter.

Usually you can just pull the slide pins and grease them. That picture you shared is only the pad material no backer plate which means corrosion separated it. New pads and grease the slides should be all you need
Edit: I’ll add that you won’t know till disassembly so I don’t shoot myself in the foot

You'll want to check for pitting on the caliper piston because that would require new calipers, but as said the slides can be cleaned up and re lubed or get slide pins and boots from rockauto on the cheap if too far gone.

Fingers crossed... guess I won’t be driving my truck for a couple weeks.... I’ll have to drive my wife’s boring SUV [emoji107]. I ordered the parts today and says it’ll be ready for pick up May 7th lol.

With a spare vehicle I'd be tempted to just get the rotors turned, lube the slide pins and throw on a set of Wagner oex pads. If those were original pads you probably have enough rotor thickness left if it just happened. If the pistons are good on the calipers that would be all you need.

So should I cancel my order?

I'd take the wheel off and pop the caliper first and check the rotor for grooves. If it all looked good I'd cancel and just do the pads and save the money, but the Z36 kit should perform better. Ultimately your call.

I’m all for safer and better but if it ain’t broke (too much) don’t fix it lol

If the caliper pistons look good and the pins get cleaned and lubed, new pads and rotors turned (assuming they have enough left to meet minimum thickness) then it won't be broke at all.
