I had an old neighbor man who was a house painter .. His lasted about 400 K MILES . But yes it was so gutless. At least it was to a 20 year old young man I was at the time.

I saw a Ram at a campground a few years ago that a turbocharger on the slant six. I guess it made enough power to haul a pickup camper on the back.

slant 6 engines are pretty durable and can be built to put out some power. Not built hemi power but a nice up grade. In stock form however, you just have to enjoy their durability.

Beat by a tenth of a second. That's a lot in a drag race! I had a slant 6 in a Duster once that the waterpump bearing was seizing up.I put a new pump on it and it was like going from worn out spark plugs to new plugs, performance wise. Lol.So with a new waterpump I may could beat you!

73 Duster had a 3 on the tree out of 1st it had 1 nut 2nd and third it was a nutless dog, I broke the plastic gear on the distributor shaft and the ballast resister for the ignition you better have a spare in glove box, but overall it was a reliable car

My brothers first car was a '63 Dart, 225, (upgrade from the 170), pushbutton auto. That engine outlasted the car, was still running great as the car slowly rusted away.

Got 2 81 slant six trucks, one 727 auto and one 833 4 spd overdrive. both are projects. Many years ago the auto truck was a daily driver. No drag truck, but it did ok.

My wife had a valiant when we met in High School 43yrs ago, it had the slant 6 and was a great car! I had a 68 Chevy long bed with a 250 straight 6 and was equally as good! The truck was given to me from my father and when I purchased a new truck in 1986, I gave it back to him and he continued driving it for many more years. We kept my wifes valiant until we purchased another car and gave the valiant back to her dad and he kept for a while. He restored many older cars as a hobby.

I had several cars with the slant 6. Wish I still had my 1970 Dodge Dart swinger with the 3 on the tree.
Only problems were those stupid solid state voltage regulators that bolted to the firewall. Loose the ground (lived in the rust belt) and it would boil a battery in about 2 miles. Carried a spare and a spare ballast resister in the glove box.
And the plastic gear on the bottom of the distributor. Has a couple of those crack.
Relativley minor issues.

I had a 80's Ram with a three on the floor, I actually thought it was pretty decent power for average driving, comparable enough to the six Cylinder Dakota's I had.

Cars and trucks have become way more complicated than need be these days. The .225 slant six and the Ford 300 Straight six were both very reliable. Its really too bad they don't still make them with modern day materials and tech. Imagine how much better and more powerfull they would be . However its not the mechanics that make vehicles unreliable any more, its the tech, its all the technical stuff that fails.

Fully agree.

I spent my youth with 250 and 292ci L6 chevy pickup trucks. Granny low 4-speed in both cases. Stupid-simple and reliable. Probably why I found my way back to L6's with my cummins trucks.

Chevy did do a modern L6 with the Atlas 4200 (LL8). I wish it has seen broader use, and less reliance on electronics (i.e. VVT). Even GM seemed to push it aside by finally offering V8s in its place on premium models.

My Schwinn bicycle is more reliable than a Dodge slant 6. NO disrespect intended. Been down that road with those engines a long time ago and never went back.
