Just plug the phone in, it will automatically pop up on the screen and phone. You’ll need to authorize the Uconnect on the phone and it should be 100% functional at that point.

Is this on the 8.4 only or will it work on my 5.0 touch also. I wish I could get my texts on the radio screen instead of picking it up to see it. And could voice reply. I’ve got steering wheel controls with the v/r

Same here, but I like the UConnect setup well enough. It required a hardware upgrade to the UConnect's guts, which they made for the 2018 MY I believe (in the Rams at least).

Yea I don’t have Navi and don’t want to pay +500 for it and just want apple play to use my phone.

I have a 2017 ram limited, according to the Web it should support CarPlay but I cannot get it to work. Does it work on the 2017 models?

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto only come in the 8.4 UAS (non-nav) and UAQ(nav) models (Starting in 2018).
There is no software update to get these features on a previous 8.4 unit. However, converting by full replacement is simple and many have done this. See the DIY board for a detailed thread covering exactly this.
Also, Android Auto and Apple Carplay doesn't display text messages on your screen. In fact, the purpose of the software is to combat that poor behavior.
