2011 5.7 1500 4x4. No tick in motor when stand still idle. No tick when driving faster than 20mph. But when I’m lightly cruising around a neighbourhood there is a tick. A metal tick. Sounds like front end. Stops when I come to a stop. Almost sounds like it’s coming from exhaust manifold, maybe a pulley hard to tell as I can’t listen and look for the sound it’s only while idle cruising. When I hit the gas it goes away. Any ideas?

i have the same issue. i have had both manifolds replaced and its back. going to try tightening the the collector bolts on the Y pipe tomorrow. everything from the intermediate pipe back is new and i ragged the tail pipe and found no leaks in any of those joints. if thats not it, its going in for a few warranty items soon and ill have them check it again. maybe the Y pipe it self has a hole, its 8 years old now. it drives me crazy thou and it is in that 20-30mph range that i hear it. i want to put a new system on it and i am not wasting the cash till that is fixed.

When you first start truck in morning, start driving and truck seems like idle is high type sound, then goes away after like 2 minutes? When my 2013 hemi exhaust manifold bolts broke, truck had odd sound for first few minutes till truck compensated for the leak(higher idle type sound) but I didn't hear a tick at idle. My 05 hemi durango did same thing, but was worse and could hear tick. Going over a bridge and tapping gas, was when I really could hear the broken bolt tick.

Is it engine speed or wheel speed related?

Not my exhaust. Went through the whole system Friday. No leaks. Still ticks between 20-30mph. Calling tomorrow to have the dealer check it out. Probably a lifter then. As far as fuel I only run 91-93 No corn.

Must be a Dodge thing. My 08 did it til I traded it in for my 18 Saturday, which also does it. Never caused an issue the entire life of the 08

dealer mechanic says he hears nothing but a loose bracket on the drivers side step bar. NY weather and salt has gotten to them and i removed them and ordered better ones. but that is not the noise. it has gotten louder. it is even more distinct in time with the rpms. i also sometimes hear it at an idle now. trying to get one of my mechanic buddys to look before i bring it somewhere else, which is tough with our work schedules.

Are you sure it is not MDS kicking in? the cam gear/phasers are noisy on these trucks when mds kicks in at low speeds it will tap. Another reason i dissabled the trash that is mds.

Drove the dealer mechanic around today. He's agrees it in the bell housing. They are taking it in on the 8th to see what it is for sure. It does only occur in Eco, even in 4 wheel. not in standard shift mode.

I swear I think my torque converter is making some kind of ticking noise! I can hear it very plainly when first started, Shift out of park or neutral into any drive gear or reverse and it is a very distinct sound

Following to see why they say!

Just picked my Ram up from the dealership. They said they flashed the computer with a new update and something else according to the receipt. They were gone for the day and sales rep. gave me the keys. It's still making the same noise. I am so pissed off right now. Granted I have abused the life time warranty I bought with it and they replaced my whole steering rack while they had it. The service manager is not going to like seeing me in the am.

Don't change the oil, get a good used oil analysis kit from blackstone labs, they will send you a kit for free, you just pay when you send it back. Follow directions, make sure you fill sample bottle full. This will let you know if that tick is leaving wear metals.

Have you checked your tires for any rocks lodged in between the treads??? I have a tick that was only noticeable at low speed, but nothing at idle or highway speed and it ended up being a rock stuck in my tire making the noise..... it took me a couple of weeks to figure it out, just a thought.

No rock. This has been for years. And only when the MDS is on. So until I have time for them to take it back in I turn off the MDS when I'm driving. It really never made a difference in fuel mileage unless I was doing long highway trips.

Thanks, but its going back in, misfires everywhere and now its knocking bad, like bad lifters. I had too much going on to follow up and open a case. i did not smell gas in the oil so that is a plus. we will be putting that extended warranty to the test. now im wishing i paid for rental on that warranty package. figured i wouldn't need it since i have put 3 rams(1978,1981 and 1994) well over 300k with out breaking down. the 2002 and '08 were solid also.

I’ve seen quite a few cam phasers on older trucks like 09-12 cause ticking at lower speeds like you’re describing. Usually only happens at slow city speeds with minimal throttle. The noise seems to come from everywhere and makes it a bear to pin point.

What happens is the phaser rattles during mds and causes the ticking noise.

Does it go away if you shift into manual mode or put it in tow haul?

yeah, thats not it. to me it sounds closer to a header leak hitting the heat shield. but i have had both manifolds replaced for broken bolts. i did have one guy on 4th GenRAMS say his mechanic told him its the after market exhaust. that when the MDS kicks in air still goes across the off cylinders and causes a drone in the Y pipe. thats why the stock has a resonator in the tail pipe and why it sounds like its coming from the torque converter. i dont know about that, sounds more like an excuse than a fact. Not a fan of the MDS anyway. i have run many tanks with it off and on. figured out on paper, not the trucks computer, less than 2mpg difference. all highway. i have far more gains in mileage with the tuner, which i havent had in for too long because its been in and out of the dealers so many times the last 2 years. good thing i bought that extra warranty package. new rear end, all new front end, control arms, tie rods in and out, steering rack, replaced both manifolds, front 4wheel actuator and computer. 8 1/2 yrs old, 185k and almost a new truck. lOl. thanks for the input thou. all is welcome. i was hoping when i bought this truck to be able to break my record. i sold my 1978 Ram Charger Sport with 301,000 original miles on it still running like a champ.
