I have got a 2004 ram 1500, 5.7 with 4x4. was doing some driveline work, and replacing the CV on the front driveshaft that comes out on the from of the transfer case. The shaft is out, and I figure I would just drive it without power to the front wheels- wrong!

To my surprise when in AWD, only the front shaft spins. I put it in drive and tried driving and I have no power to the rear drive shaft. If I shift into 4hi or 4lo I can drive it. In AWD, I can see the exposed front spline coming out of the transfer case spinning only...

Is there something wrong with my transmission or transfer case? Either that or I know nothing about what I thought I did with this truck drivetrain. I thought it was constant power to the rear wheels, and the AWD would sense slippage and put power to the front wheels as needed.

It us sending power to the front because you are making it believe there is slippage

Which is why 4low and high work...because they send power evenly.

Awd sends power to the slipping wheel.

Essentially all power can go to one wheel.
