Just bought a 2018 Ram, white with black trim. The paint appears to be too thin (not enough paint) on parts of the hood. Anyone else have this issue? I would love to go to the dealer with as much info as possible to make this a quick fix. Happy New Year

Go to the local body shop and ask if they can measure a few spots to determine the paint thickness.

This will give you information that can be backed up. Most auto body and for sure detail shop can and do measure paint thickness.

Good Luck

Detailers have a tool that measures clear coat, but why do you think it is too thin? Can you see the metal throw it? Generally speaking on new vehicles dealers are pretty good about fixing defects in paint, go as soon as possible, don't wait.

They used to be expensive, but now you can get one for 15 bucks, lol.

We need to see a picture of the paint defect to reasonably comment, which on white paint is hard to do. Just take it to the dealer if you are not happy.

FYI My 2018 has 5 - 5.5 mils on the hood and the rest of the body, which is a good thickness for an OEM non-repainted hood.

However, I only have 1.5 - 2 mils on the rear bumper. My guess is it was painted separately from the truck and likely at a secondary supplier.

I’ll try to post a pic tomorrow. It’s so thin that you can see the primer underneath the white paint in some areas.

Do you think the hood was repainted? Look for excessive dust nibs in the paint, sandscratch swelling, tape lines at the bottom side edge of the panel, or uneven clear coat orange peel.

My truck had the driverside rambox cover, and part of the passenger side cab, repainted before delivery. Unfortunately it happens. Our vehicles can get damaged in assembly and/or shipping. Even though I spotted it I still gave my dealer a 9 out of 10 for vehicle condition.

Repainted or not, if there is a defect you are not happy with the dealer should take care of it. They take the ratings you give them to FCA very seriously.

That's a nice tool, how much did it cost?

yes facias and bumpers are done separately from an outside source, usually the only thing done in-house is the shell, doors and hood, tailgate(anything metal) and it would after be a very rare occasion that the paint would be different thickness since it all shot by a robot

Bud, take it to the dealer, my bet they will fix it on a new truck.

Can't say exactly as its gotta be 15 years old by now.

Looks like amazon has a new version of it for $700. Or you could give the $15 knockoff version Burla linked above a go.
