What's up guys. Question about my 2019 PW, a few times this past week while driving I got a message about "Battery Saver Mode" and it all but disabled my radio. Owners manual did not mention anything about, and a limited google search kind of explained it to me. Has anyone experienced this and if so what was the cause? It's been cold in the Northeast and I'm assuming that could be a factor. My voltage displayed between 14-16V and didn't seem low enough to reduce the power to "non essential" functions.
Thanks for any help/insight.
I'm having the same issue with my 2017.
Battery Saver Mode issue
2017 Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn 6.7L Cummins
Truck was not used for two weeks in -30 to -35C.
After this two weeks ( at -20C ) I plugged the truck block heater in for 4+ hours then tried to start the truck with Remote Start, would not start. Went out and started the truck in cab and let it warm up for 10+ minutes (
have always had the truck set to turn the heated seat and heated steering wheel on for all starts)
. Winter front installed.
Drove for 20 minutes at 80km/hr to 110km/hr (Elk Island area to Sherwood Park, Alberta). All was good. Stopped at a store for about 30 minutes then on start up I had a "Battery Saver Mode" message. No radio, heated seats or heated steering wheel. Cabin heater worked. No other messages or warnings.
Drove about 5 minutes to next stop ( about 30 minute off time) and on start all worked. 5 minutes driving the radio, heated seats and heated steering wheel shut off.
Got home and put the batteries on a smart charger in place (-20C). Batteries were at 80%. After 24 hours of charging batteries did not get past 90%, charger went into alarm.
Suspected batteries were bad so pulled original ones and purchased new ones. Truck was without batteries for about 24 hours. Charged new batteries to 100% before install. Start-up on install was fine with no messages/warnings.
One week later (-18C) could not start truck remotely. Started truck in cab and Battery Saver Mode came up. After a good 10 minute warm up I drove for 20 minutes at 80 km/hr (again no radio, heated seats or heated steering wheel).
After first stop and start up all was good until 2 minutes down the road, back to Battery Saver Mode.
Got home and put the batteries on the smart charger again . Batteries were too low to read. Batteries would not charge past 80% in 20 some hours. (my charger goes into alarm if full capacity is not reached in 24 hours).
Yesterday I went into the control settings and turned the heated seat and heated steering wheel off on all start ups. Pressed the mute button on the stereo (have not found a way to turn the radio/amp off, only mute). I made these changes in Run position (not running). It put my charger into failure, batteries dropped to 11.5V because engine went to pre heat. Reset the charger and was able to get the batteries back to 100%.
100% was not achievable before this change.
Today (+8C) on start up, no Battery Saver Mode message, now showing a check engine light "Service DEF System, See Dealer".
Four years of same settings with no changes on my part and now having issues...I will not accept it's a cold weather issue...
Suspect heated seats, steering wheel, amp, DEF system (relays stuck?) and firmware update needed.
I kept the original batteries because I don't think there is anything wrong with them. Out of the truck I was able to charge both to 100%. Removed from charging, a few weeks later I metered them and they are still at 12.9V. Put back on the charger they came to 100% within minutes.
Am told these are AGMs (Johnson Controls 12V-56029635AC) but do not see any indication of this on the batteries, hope they are but no idea.
Was surprised when I removed the insulation covering my batteries. My truck is 2017, the batteries were manufactured in 2013.
