So I'm contemplating the idea of painting my truck with bedliner.

I've read some info from those that have attempted it before but it's left me with some questions.

If one was to paint their truck with bedliner, would their be any prep involved? Would I need to sand any or will the bedliner adhere well without sanding?

Also would a spray on rattle can liner be efficient or should I go with a roll on?

Any advice or information is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

yes prep work is needed. You'll need to sand everything down as if you were painting it. Don't even try that rattle can crap it doesn't work very well for anything. Roll on would be better (think like monstaliner) or if you can suffer the money Linex or RhinoLiner will do whole trucks, just need to find a shop that does it.

I'll be going at this myself. I have a small compressor so I may just buy a spray gun and go that route. But I definitely won't be outsourcing the job. I'm hoping to complete this task over the course of the next couple of weeks.

How much sanding are we talking here? Down to primer or just enough to scuff it up?

Lots of prep work needed. I've helped a few buddies coat their Jeeps. My favorite product is Monstaliner. You can roll it or spray it on with a gun, both come out good. They sell kits for covering a whole vehicle and have lots of color choices. It holds up very well in the sun as well. When I finally commit to it, I'll be going the same route. Expect atleast a whole day worth of prep work.

Monsta is da bomb (does anyone even use that phrase anymore?). Seriously, it's good looking stuff. Check it out.

I just looked at it. Looks like good stuff. Makes me wonder what separates it from the less expensive roll ons?

Also, I've never prepped a car or truck for painting, how much sanding is required? What's the goal?

That video was great! I wonder how much they'd charge to do a whole RCSB? :D

Honestly I wouldn't be willing to pay it regardless. My trucks body isn't perfect and I'm not looking to make a show truck. I really just hate the white paint. Most likely I'll be going a very low cost route. The prepping in video makes it very clear what the prep work involves. Thanks for that. Also that orange rhinotuff looks great on that storm truck.

ALOT. Line-X is like $500-600 for a short bed. I can't imagine what they'd charge for a whole truck.

You wanted to know how Monstaliner compares to other DIY bed paints. Only other bed paint I've used is Raptorliner. Its just as strong and the texture is similar to Monstaliner except the sun dulls it. UPOL sells a "Rejuvenator" kit to bring the color and shine back. Expect that to be a 2-3 times a year thing. Its even worse if its colored. Other products are either too weak or the texture is ridiculous. That stuff that Duplicolor sells is such a ripoff. The slightest graze and it'll come right off. Then you have Herculiner that has such a rough texture with big chunks of rubber. Makes it a pain in the ass to clean and will scratch you if you rub against it.

You can get some sample paint chips for free off Monstaliner's website. See if you like the texture.

As far as sanding goes, the rougher the surface the better it'll stick. There's a crap ton of videos on Youtube to help you out.
