Best Oil Weight?

I know, I know. Another G-D Effing oil question. I can't find this so called infamous [and vaguely typed] "oil thread" via the search. You know, the one with 1100+ pages?

Yeah. Can't find it. Either way, I've narrowed my oil decision down to two choices.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum or Redline.

And my filter is also down to two choices

Royal Purple, or Fram Ultra.

Some questions.

I've read that once you go Redline, you're "stuck with it" Does that mean literally? If so, why?

What's the best overall oil weight for our trucks? Mind you, mine could see anything. I could end up road-tripping to Alaska or Canada for a vacation, or go to Glamis and have some fun. Truck could stay bone stock[ha, no] or end up swapped with another hemi, bored/stroked, and boosted on e85, etc.

I've heard the main contenders are 5w30 and 0w40, but what about 5w40, 0w30, 5w50, 10w60, etc?

And what about straight weight oil? I had someone once tell me multi-weight oil was ********[not that I fully believed him] because, and I quote, "how the **** can something get thicker as it gets hotter?"

So would straight weight 20, 30, or 40 be any good? Or was he absolutely full of **** on that statement?

And finally, what are the top 3-4 contenders for additives? Should I add multiple additives? How much total additive should be in my oil?

Oh, and how tightly do I tighten the oil filter?

Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic 5W40. Get it just about any autoparts store or Walmart by the gallon jug. Easy to find and cheap.

Filters I use are any of the following, depending on where I'm shopping at the time - Mobil1 M1-301 (expensive but good), Purolator PL30001 or STP S8AXL (both are much cheaper than the Mobil1 filter and just as good). These are all larger (longer) than the OEM replacements and hold more oil in them. Direct spin-on fit otherwise. Oil filters should always be hand tightened and only 1/4 to 1/2 turn from fully seated, with oil on the gasket before you put it on. Or as tight as you can get with ONLY your hand, no tools.

Only additive I've used on a regular basis has been Restore for 8 cylinders.

Attached is the last Blackstone oil report from my truck. 10,800 miles on the oil and it was still good. The truck now has 199,786 miles as of today and the engine has NEVER been opened.

They could probably give you an educated guess. They sample thousands of oil samples so they probably have a good idea.

Not trying to open a can here but my opinion on oil and oil brands probably will surprise many and maybe even **** off some. Now admittedly I am no expert on anything engine related or anything else for that matter but I am very experienced in engine building. I have been building engines since the mid 80s and have built a many of drag and dirt late model engines upward of 800hp normally aspirated. Have also built my share of 2 stroke outboard race engines as well. I personally drive a 2003 Ram 1500 SC with the 5.7/rfe545 combo. I bought the truck in 2004 with 20k miles on the clock and gave it the " I just bought a new truck I better change the oil " idea. So I went to Walmart and bought about 7 qts of then I think it was Tech 2000 20w50 oil and the cheapest (fram) oil filter I could buy at that time. I began driving the truck (I own a forklift business) week in and week out and year in and year out without another oil change until the summer of 2012 when the water pump went out. At the time the truck had about 300k on the clock and so i decided while i was changing the water pump I guess I will go ahead and drain the oil and change it. Now to all you NAYSAYERS out there I did on occasion add a qt here and there when I would have oil left over after changing the oil on a customers forklift but never removed the drain plug from 2004-2012. Well as of today the odometer reads 411,213 miles and STILL has the old FRAM oil filter I put on in 2004. This truck still has the ORIGINAL NOT REBUILT/REPLACED 5.7 hemi engine, original transmission and the original rear w 3.92 LSD. The dash is trash, ball joints been gone, driver seat and console are torn up and I have put 1 radiator and 2 waterpumps on it but never put a wrench on the engine itself. I hear oil debates several times a year and I guess with some of the MDS motors maybe the 5/20 oil is required but I guess what I'm saying in a comical way is if someone out there has a more proven oil than 10.00 gallon Walmart and a better oil filter than a 3.59 fram I'm certainly open to hear their testimony.

Anyway, guys. I think I'm decided on this 'Redline' stuff and a Royal Purple filter. Just need to know which Redline oil and which oil weight is the overall best for Hemi engines for every environment and performance level.

Any oil and filter qs you have just post em up there .
Imo there are several folks that can answer .
As far as Redline goes most use it because they had loud or ticking Hemi's ....and I've never heard of if you use Redline oil you are stuck with it LOL ??
I use Redline oil because I had a very loud "imo" engine , with Redline it's quiet and smooth .

No you’re not stuck with redline or any other kind of oil once you use it.

That guy that told you that multi weight oil is ********, is full of ********. They get thicker as temperatures change because they use specific compounds that react different to temperatures. Just because he’s too dense to understand the concept doesn’t mean he should spread bad information.

As far as oil/filters, I don’t overthink ****. I use the weight that the manufacturer says to use and an oem filter. Change it at correct intervals (not 300,000 miles like a few posts above lol) and you will be fine.

Also, the reason I use oem filters is because most of the time oem filters have like double the amount of filter media in them compared to other filters. There’s tons of videos online of people cutting them open. If you think about it, the manufacturer has to warranty that engine for years, so they usually will have the best oil filters.

I bet the orange fram is just on bypass and not filtering after 10k much less 300k.
