I'm thinking about having my 5.2L V8 in my 1999 Ram 1500 sport bored over. I don't know everything about the process but I was wondering if it was a good idea. Could ya'll give me some feedback? :happy160:

I'd stroke it instead. If I remember correctly the 318 has thinner cylinder walls than the 360 and doesn't take overboring too nicely sometimes.

How do you stroke an engine? I know I sound like an idiot but I don't know a ton of engine stuff.

Don't remember the specifics, but it involves a stroke crank and rods.

Basically rebuilding the bottom end. Makes the cubes a 390 stroker I think.

A stroker motor involves a crank with more offset from the center line, allowing for a longer stroke (hence the name) which effectively increased your engine displacement.

If you're going to spend the money on a stroker, find yourself a nice 5.9 block and go from there. 408 strokers are a pretty potent monster when coupled with a nice set of heads etc. Oooo the fun days of Dakota-Durango.com!

I'm interested to see the suggestions here too. My '98 has the 318 that is worn out after all these years. I always figured I'd swap it out for a 360 down the road, but it looks like there may be some more options.

An overbore requires removing the motor, disassembling it, taking it to a machine shop and having it bored, then re assembling it with new oversize pistons and rings. You will see very little gain from this, as I believe a 0.030 overbore in a 318 brings you to around a 321.

I vote stroker. The 318 stroked to a 390 is plenty stable, dont really have to worry with cyl wall thickness at that level as its just a .030 overbore and a 4.00" stroke. 408 is a good option too, though I've seen some well built 390s outperform a 408.
