I wanted to add here since we're talking MDS there is also the little eco indicator on the instrument cluster that reports when you're driving in a fuel conserving way. I'm not here to debate how closely that is or isn't related to MDS operation but I think it would be hard to argue that MDS operation and the eco light are not both looking for similar conditions.

I have outfit slightly larger than stock tires on my truck and before I corrected the tire size in the PCM the truck would almost never display "eco" when traveling 60+ mph (GPS reported) and even when it was on, even the slightest dip in the road or gust of wind would cut it back off. As I said before I can't hear any change with MDS on my side exit exhaust so I don't know what that was doing.

After correcting the tire size in the PCM, the behavior of the eco light is unmistakably much more consistent. If the MDS uses some of the same criteria to choose when to operate then it adds another reason to calibrate your truck for bigger tires, beyond just having an accurate speedometer and odometer.

I wonder if people associate MDS with the issue due to it likely also being active at idle or low engine speed conditions? Hence not enough splash.

I've heard/read the theory that fleet vehicles may be more susceptible to have abnormal idle hours. Can't remember where, there's like 4 or 5 different ram forums haha.

You make it sound easy, but changing out the cam and lifters is not something most can do and the price on those parts is far from cheap..lol

Nothing hard about a cam swap. plenty of good DIY on here. And Its cheaper than trading it in for another RAM that will do the same crap.

The old saying of "1 unhappy customer tells 10 people,1 happy customer tells nobody" comes to mind .Percentage wise very few trucks have cam /lifter issues in comparision to the amount of them on the road.

You're not driving it hard enough, lol.Just razzing ya,lol. But in all honesty where you've been living the last several years, means the trucks idle more then most Brandon, and that might be the biggest contributing factor to why you've seen a few with eaten up cams/lifters especially if they're oil patch company trucks, nobody ever shuts a company truck off in the patch, they sit and idle the majority of time, lol

That's very true. My truck idles quite a bit not so much now but only in the morning and at night when it was cold. I could try driving it harder. I might get arrested tho [emoji23]

Yeah pulling the motor apart is simple weekend job, and how much is that going to cost in total ?

Lol like I would buy another Ram...

They are oiled via 3 different ways - through the oil galley, through the pushrods, and a little mist/splash.
There is always a minimum of 3 psi being fed to them via the oil galley and they are literally flooded with oil during MDS operation.
Which is why some of the more recent info from owners is to leave MDS on, if you've been turning off via gear selector switch each start, or have a tuner that can switch off permanently.

Fyi - HD models did not get the eco idiot light for MDS. I've owned both trucks.

MDS is not on at idle. There is a speed limit threshold. Don't recall what, been 3 years since I owned a half ton. Maybe 20mph
