Hi , very new to this forum, this is my first post. Hello everyone!

I just want to say i have always wanted a truck, my mom that has since passed in 21' from that c word we shouldn't mention always wanted me to have a truck and a lifelong friend gifted me his 2016 laramie ram hemi 5.7 hemi from colorado, it is rust and rot free, so at the bare minimum is a great platform. That being said it has 156k miles and has that dreaded hemi lifter tick. My advise question is on what ya'll think i should do. I have a friend that is a ram/dodge/crystler dealership ase certified mechanic with prior background replacing lifters in these motors offer me to do the work for $800 labor, but my cousin and father in law say i should bring it to a shop and not some guy going to my house to fix it. The tick is very loud and also there seems to be a leak from the passanger exh manifold + valve cover gasket on the passanger side. I just see the bill if i bring it to a shop of 5k+. I know with the resale value of these, even if i put 10k into it i would be ahead, but my budget isn't infinate and i just would like prior knowlegeable advise on this. Thank you for your time!

I would also like to add the information, my friend has driven this for about 4 1/2 weeks with the tick and would you recommend replacing the cams at the same time as lifters? thank you

I agree with your cousin and FIL… a reputable shop will back-up their work…while a “friend” is someone you cannot hold responsible without injuring your relationship.

Are you 100% sure it's the lifters?

Broken exhaust manifold bolts can be a source of tick, and if the manifolds warp enough, it might not go away when warm.

A proper diagnosis is the first step .
Is it the exhaust manifolds that need bolts /studs replaced, and the manifolds resurfaced ?
And or are the lifters and cam in need of replacement ?

And or could it be both ?
This could add up quickly, especially if there is lots of metal on the oil control valve .
In which case a fresh crate motor may be the better choice.
Check MMX , High Horse Performance, Moes, shop hemi, and others for prices on complete engines , or long blocks.

Thats quite a tick you have.

Call around and get some prices to do a crate engine, or an install if you buy the engine and have it delivered, if they will do that.

Any shop may want to diagnose it first, that will cost you a bit, but worth it.

I would recommend OE parts for the repair, and from reputable sources, no matter who does the job for you.

Please keep us posted.

Here is a video of the tick https://youtube.com/shorts/P65Fhm64OOs?si=pv8WIwz3G7vq0Icc and the truck has 2 codes : p219a bank 1 air fuel imbalance and p0128 engine coolant temp is below threshold.... thank you
p219A could be caused by loose intake manifold bolts, the po128 could be caused by a stuck open thermostat.
If your buddy is a legit Chrysler mechanic and has done lifter jobs before,i'd let him do it,especially if he'll let you help, that way you'll also learn something while saving yourself a pile of money.
First thing to do,is remover the intake manifold,so you can get at the VVT solenoid, then remove it,if the screen on it is badly covered in metal flakes, you're probably farther ahead either putting a new crate long block ,or a complete crate engine in the truck

Hemi only has 1 cam,and if it does have a chewed up lifter, you're going to have to replace the cam at the same time,as the lifter will have ruined the cam

If the guy is a legit dealer mechanic I'd go that route, just don't cheap out on replacement parts. See if he will do the manifolds also. If he listens to it he should be able to tell if it's lifters manifolds or both.
