Here to ask the annoying questions.

Currently eyeballing a 2018 that’s well spec’ed with 105k miles for 35k, as well as a similarly optioned 2019 with 114k for 41.

The 18 is also in easy travel distance (1 hour flight and 6 hour drive back) but the 19 is in Michigan (I’m in Florida).

Both have CARFAX showing oil changes regularly around 10k miles. The 2019’s dealership put new brakes and did suspension work that they won’t disclose the specifics. I’ve asked multiple times.

Is the 8 speed (and other updates) worth spending more on?

Budget is 43500 out the door, and I’ve been stalking the market as prices drop for the last 5 months. Seems like the higher mileage stuff just sits. There’s one guy who wants like 45 for an 18 with 165k miles… kind of delusional pricing. Hah.

Thanks for the input.

Excuse me, as a noobie to the forum I don’t think being snarky is appropriate…

But I did post this in the Power Wagon section.

2500 Power Wagon. 2018 vs 19.

6 vs 8 speed

8.4” vs 12” screen

No surround cameras vs surround cameras

No rear heated seats vs rear heated.

Old winch vs new winch.

Less fancy front end vs fancy looking front end and headlights

Lastly - limited edition tan color vs. white.

With a hemi you are going to want the 8 speed. That would be enough to sway me towards the 19.

Edit: I just saw the 19 is in the "salt belt". No way, been there done that and will never get another northern truck again.

I'd keep looking for a 19+ that is closer and not in the salt.

Welcome!!

100k+ miles would make me think twice at that price but if it passes the test drive, cool!

Hemi and the 8spd is a must have. Beyond that, choose what you want with the options.

Nothing you mentioned really stands out to me as a make or break deal.

Mtnrider - looks like the Michigan one as bought at auction - all of the service records show Wyoming and Colorado. But it’s been on their lot since October.

G-Ride - thanks! Yeah 100k was not in my plan (current truck is a gen 1 tundra Doublecab with 220k and the suspension is falling apart). Doesn’t feel super safe to drive a family around in.

This market is absolutely bonkers. Some of these 4 year old trucks with less than 80k are listed for a whopping 5-7k off of what they originally paid.

More unsolicited details -

I don’t have to drive a ton because I work from home, and the current truck only gets 15mpg on the highway, and I want a truck that I feel small in (6’6”, 265lbs), plus center consoles are a dealbreaker for me with leg space or else I’d look at Rebels for budget reasons.

Used to drive a wrangler JKU and took it on off-roading trips that I’d like to start again once the kids are a little older. So the intent is a one and done purchase for the next decade. Dumped that because I got tired of the roll cage and speaker bar hitting me in the head off-road and also space once I started commuting more than 3 miles at the beach.

Maintenance matters in older vehicles. I would want to meet the previous owner and hear about his maintenance schedule.
If it were me, I would consider a diesel if it is an older high mileage vehicle for that kind of money.

Well the PW is not going to improve your gas mileage any, likely be worse. Best option, fix the suspension on the Tundra and wait for prices to normalize. We are already seeing advertisements here in Canada for 12,000 off MSRP from Ram on new pickups and the dealer lots are stuffed with product. The new vehicle market is coming back to normal.

If you must have a bigger pickup now, I would keep looking. Neither of those two sound like a deal, but the 2019 and newer PWs features and options are way ahead of the 2018s.

Yeah - not really worried about improving MPG. I used to get 12-14 on cross country road trips in the Wrangler. The Tundra just improved when I reprogrammed the speedo which fixed the shift points so it would stop revving crazy high on the highway. The previous owners put a ******, welded on, backyard lift and 35’s on it so yeah.

The Tundra also has a different “stop driving the vehicle” issue every 6 months, and the computer keeps deactivating Overdrive randomly. I got it for 5 grand right before the pandemic (they took my offer well below asking, I think because it had an oil leak I fixed for 200 bucks that I think the previous owners panicked about). It’s gonna cost me close to that to get it squared away plus tires at this point, and it’s like sinking money into a black hole.

I just have an irrational fear that the truck market doing what the wakeboard boat market has done - where the newer stuff is becoming so prohibitively expensive that they’re selling 10-15 year old boats for their prices new, and I’m not convinced it’s going to actually get better.

But you’re probably right, waiting for a gen 5 to drop in price is probably the move.

If your budget is in the 40ish range probably would be hard to get a 5th gen with low miles. If willing to go the 4th gen route you can get a good mileage one no problem. I recently bought a 2016 power wagon in October for 30k out the door but it did have 110k on it. Mileage doesn’t scare me as long as it has been taken care of. These 6.4’s were built to handle hard work and longevity. I believe they were put through the same rigorous test the Cummins goes through. I found this one near me with good miles but a 2017

Just a thought, in U.S, dollars that new 2023 Ram would be 56092. Not very far off your budget amount. I have an FCA fleet number, I know I can sell trucks after either 6 or 12 months, don't recall the exact time limit, even into the States and the warranty is still fully transferable, and you can buy extended warranty for them also. Might be a reasonable option for finding a next to new truck for not a lot more than one with 100,000 miles on it.

Wyoming and Colorado don't have the salt issue BUT they do use anti-skid and sand which blasts everything.
I would worry about how much offroading was done with it also - esp. from those 2 states.

18 21.0K/yr
19 28.5/yr

Neither - per year mileage too high on both.

To me the issue with both is they are more than 50% used up and still selling for 75% of new. On a cost per usable mile a new one is actually quite a lot less money. 40,000 for another 100K miles is 40 cents per, 60,000 for 200,000 miles is only 30 cents a mile. That is a big cost difference, $20,000 over driveable life, and it is the metric I use to evaluate buying used versus new.

Never thought of that.

The market is wild though. There’s a local one for 48 with 75k, but they put what looks like wheels and tires from a tradesman on it and it’s low on the feature set. Gonna see if they’ll sell it for wholesale tomorrow but you know… probably not.

Good news, the 18 is apparently off the table now so the prices these people are putting out there are going to make this decision really easy.

I just can’t wrap my head around trucks sold in 2019 for less than 60k being listed for the base MSRP of 53 when they have 50-70k miles on them.

Which is why I’m looking at such high mileage vehicles to fit in the budget.

What is the best deal you can find on a new, no mile power wagon. That makes comparing to used very easy. I bought a new Laramie 2500 in 2021 because it was cheaper in actual total dollars, than low mile 2020s and 2019s that were up for sale at the time.
