New here and found a bunch of threads about Cam's but none that deal with the sound. I'm not that interested in perfomance. I don't race and I'm not trying to be the fastest in town. I just want my truck to sound mean. And not just loud. I love the sound of a good cam!

So what I'm looking for is the best sounding cam for a daily driver with the least amount of additional work to put into it. Meaning not a ton of other aftermarket parts. Can I do a cam/tuner and be good to go for the sound? Read a bunch on the 6.1 cam but how does it sound?

Also, I'm in California so can anyone give advice on how a cam would affect smog?

Thanks in advance!!!

To get a big lopey cam sound, you are going to need a big lopey cam. This is going to require a custom tune and a higher stall tq converter to put you into the powerband of the cam. The 6.1 cam doesnt sound much different than stock.

If you want loud, I would just start off with an exhaust cutout. The loudest setup would be if you replaced the cats with dual cutouts, but that is not going to work with you being in CA. Try a single cutout first just behind the Y-pipe, and if that is not loud enough, you are going to have to remove your cats and find a way to pass your smog inspection.

I definately know what you mean, nothing like the sound of a big block with a nice lopey cam!

Thanks Trupiano! That's exactly what I'm looking for. What are the mods on that rig?

Saw the sticky on Cams so I'm understanding what it will take. I'm ok with the springs, pushrods, etc. but I don't want to get into changing the heads and I don't see too many options for headers that would be legal in cali. I do like the Borla exhaust and am thinking about keeping it. I just want lopey, not loud.

You guys are fast! Thanks for the replies!

Honeslty he's got a lot of mods, but for the sound I think it's mainly just the cam and a couple small engine supporting parts along with the exhaust and an intake.

I'll have to message him. His profile says he's in California so I'm interested to see how that thing does for Smog.

Thanks again!

I love my lopey exhaust because of my cam, but I'd never drop that much into it just for the sound. Its not just the cam that needs to be done, a full exhaust is needed, it needs tuned to run a big lopey cam too you can't just drop one in and turn the key.

it's been awhile since i was here and I truly appreciate the compliments...Like I said in the pm, all you need is the cam and supporting pushrods and springs as well as a custom tuneable tuner (like diablo)...being out here in cali I do have a custom smog tune i run when smog testing. Like others have said, if you don't do anything else to exhaust, at least add the cutout..nothing like havin options whether you want just the people next to you to hear the lope or turn heads as you cruise into a parking lot and see the motor heads drool..

Could toss in a Comp 273 for alot of lope, Crane 216, SRT Max from Inertia. All of whitch will give you alot of lope but unless you go with all of the supporting mods your not going to get anything out of the cams. Adding headers will completly change the exhaust note also.

Don't think I've ever heard of anyone changing a cam and/or their powerband just for the sound of it. It'd suck if you get the lopeyness and it's slower than it was before.

Not to be a ****, but thats f***ing poser man. Thats like this retard I met at a show with a intercooler that was made for show only? I looked aT it for a while and finally asked is this functional? and he bowed his head and said no......don't be like that. If a good sound is what u want just go LT headers, no cats, and open cutou

That's it! That's the sound! Nice clip Trup.

Now, me and my 4.7 will sit (quietly) in the corner. Total 5.7 envy.

The reason for the cam is to get that certain sound. You don't get that from a cutout and no exhaust. All you get with that is loud. And that's not what I want. The performance will be there with a cam but I don't race so it won't matter. There are few vehicles on the road with a nice rumble. Car and truck guys know when you have a cutout or when you have really done something to the motor to make that thing rumble. A cam for sound a poser move? Hardly.

Have you priced out what getting the cam sound is going to cost you? Realistically do you know what it takes to go from this:

[yt]epxrhE0BRP8&list=UUiObmOVglpcwVNI1KJGTm7g&index=9&feature=plcp[/yt]

To this:

[yt]5PW6pvE_-Dc&list=UUiObmOVglpcwVNI1KJGTm7g&index=3&feature=plcp[/yt]

I can tell you it takes a lot. More if you can't do alot of it yourself.

The red ram with the SRT max was base tune on stock heads open exhaust. He totaled the truck trying to race it about 2 and a half years ago. Drinking then street racing ends up with your ride around a tree. Figure on dropping 3k into your project to get anything out of a big cam for all the supporting mods and tune and cam price with install and fluids.

Here is the memorial for that truck, at 1:49 you will see the aftermath..... the kid blamed the tires....
