I've been thinking about switching my head unit to an alpine. I currently have the tiny touch screen that ram provides on the express 2014 ram... it sucks... takes forever to load on start up like my music, back up camera etc.. so I've been wondering if I can switch to like a really nice alpine or Pioneer. I noticed on the touch screen options I can set timing for my lights, if my horn goes off when I lock the doors and other neat features... so what we're to happen to that if I switch the head unit? If it's even possible... best buy told me it wasn't possible.

Lol , lots of guys install aftermarket radios , have you considered upgrading to the OEM RA4 8.4" touchscreen radio like in the higher trim levels above the Express ?
I upgraded to the OEM RA2 5.0" Touchscreen , hands free Bluetooth and texting , added audio controls to the steering wheel and installed the Factory OEM backup Cam. All really easy to do imo .
I'm about to upgrade again to the Factory OEM RA4 8.4 " Radio . There's a thread on it in 4th gen audio & electronics . Now the harness connection www.harness-connection.us has a premade harness that makes it plug n play , you could do this all yourself .
I'll post a couple links for you here in a few minutes.

Hope this helps !

Yes, you cna switch. GO to Crutchfield adn tehy will get you the correct conection to interface with your ram. All those features, changing whether horn honks on door lock and stuff can be doen thru the EVIC in between your mph and rm gauges.

Word of advice , read lots , make a detailed list , once you have a good grasp on what's required ( THEN ) ask informed Qs at the end of the thread , there's lots of guys there that are really informative and helpful.

I just installed the pioneer 4200nex with steering wheel controls this past weekend. Best buy told me same that it could not be done without serious modifications. BS lol. Ordered the dash kit and wiring harness from ebay simple install. I had the 5.0 too.

If you want to retain access to the factory settings controlled through the radio I'd suggest going to idatalink's website choosing a compatible radio (either Kenwood or alpine, pioneer can't access all the features) and get the idatalink maestro rr and ch3. I just installed a Kenwood ddx773bh and the idatalink maestro rr and ch3 and have access to everything that is controlled through the radio. With some time spent on eBay I was able to get the radio for $299 and the idatalink maestro rr and ch3 for $129.

^^ took the words right out of my mouth.

if you dont get the proper harnesses certain functions of the stock truck will not work.

As stated go with Maestro and Kenwood.

Just got back from a corporate training... this combo will very shortly offer adaptive back up camera lines as well. (Lines turn with steering wheel)

I'm not sure if it retains the factory backup camera or not but I had previously tapped into the feed for other head units I've used. So at least with the Kenwood I was able to turn off the guide lines for either the Kenwood or the maestro and use the factory camera guide lines
