Hi guys, ive got the 4.7 in my 2003 ram 1500. had some issues with it a few days ago, was driving it early in the morning when it was cold, i let the truck warm up before driving. drove about 10 miles and truck starts idleing funny, it sounded exactly like a diesel truck. a mile or 2 later the truck loses power slowly and dies, i pull over, give it a second and it starts back up, drive another mile or 2 and engine starts loosing power again i pull over, engine turns over but wont start. during the second break down it still seemed to turn over just fine, it was trying to fire, it just wouldnt start. I towed it back home to work on it later during the day. well when i come home to work on it and start turning the motor over its acting kind of like there is no compression. i check compression....ive got good compression accross the board except for the first 2 cylinders on the passanger side of the engine. ok...so maybe a cracked block, cracked head or blown head gasket....im not sure.....we suspected maybe a broken timing chain...my injectors are still clicking which tells me that cam and crank both have to be rotating since for the injectors to pulse they need signal from the cam and crank sensor. the truck has fuel spraying from the injectors, fire from the coils and spark plugs....and compression in 6 cylinders out of 8.....so why wont it try to fire? has anyone had this happen to them? any suggestions? im not getting any trouble codes

Those engines have aluminum heads and three timing chains. Primary and two secondaries. Not sure what symptoms you could get if one of the secondaries went.

Pull the heads and do an inspection of the cylinders that are bad. Sounds like the rings burnt. A cracked block or head will put antifreeze into the oil which will be real noticeable. Best way to see if it is burnt rings without taking the head off is to remove the dipstick and sniff the oil. It should not smell like gasoline at all. If it does then your problem is the rings. The 4.7 is bad for burning the top of the piston. Here are what I installed into my daughters truck when I rebuilt the motor: AirRam - Cold Air Induction System

They eliminate the problem with the piston burning the top ring, plus Air Ram ahs a lot of other parts that I stuck into her truck (ok my 16 year old daughter got the truck as a hand me down from me as a birthday present). Using all parts from Air-Ram might seem a little expensive, but it is worth it to bullet proof the engine and get a bit more performance from it.

wouldnt you guys think the truck should still start up, i got 6 cylinders with good compression, i got fuel, injector pulse, and spark. so wouldnt the engine try to fire and run on 6 cylinders, even if it runs like crap it should still start shouldnt it. its turning over but not even trying to fire. what do you guys think?

lol, i cant understand why it wont try to even putter, its acting like there is something missing in the combo of fuel, spark or compression.....idk, i was hoping if i could get it to run to try some blue devil or some other type of head/block/headgasket bandaid repair....maybe worth a little gamble, but i guess tomorrow ill but working on pulling a head off....ugh

The engine should still run even with the *****'d head.

You've checked if the plugs are firing, right? Almost sounds like the ASD relay has tripped...

Automatic Shut Down relay. It's a special relay in the fuse box under the hood. I forget what practical purpose they're supposed to have, but most of the time all they do is fail and cause a no-spark. lol

You should be able to replace that relay with a standard one for testing purposes.

Or just short out the load pins in the socket. Unless the problem in on the coil side...........

It should be labeled on the underside of your PDC cover.
