You couldn't be more wrong. Electronic fuel injection alone has had a huge impact in performance and fuel economy. And emission control to the extent it is now wouldn't be possible without computers controlling everything. Safety is also much better than it used to be because of computers. Good luck getting people to give up their adaptive cruise control, head-up display, and parking sensors LOL. I do agree that we can and did get along without computer controlled vehicles for a long time. But saying we could go back to that and retain the same level of performance, emissions control, and safety is like saying we could shut down the power grid and go back to cooking over fires and living in huts. What do we need the IC chips for any way? We built successful vehicles for decades without them!
I think we need to take a step back, and stop putting all this electronic stuff in vehicles! It's the stuff that is always going wrong nowdays ! Consumable items like brakes starters and alternators always need replacement. All the chips do is make it expensive and confusing to repair. The technology has not advanced performance enough, pollution enough, to make a real difference!
Furthermore: Electric is not an environmental answer either, Power grids are already struggling, and burning vast amounts of coal, and diesel power to dig the coal !
The zero emissions fools who drive Tesla's are ignorant !
You do not need to be on your phone in your car ! We lived without that feature for decades !
We don't need electronics in cars !

Disagree if you want, it's a free country. I never said carburetor efficiency couldn't be improved. But at the end of the day, carb admustment is at best a compromise. It's at the mercy of changing environmental and atmospheric conditions. It may be possible to improve carbs to account for those changing conditions, but it would require a computer. You see where I'm going with that LOL.Well maybe I'm in the minority! I've never found cruise control to be particularly useful . it would work fine if everyone else on the road cooperated. I have found it to be near dangerous. My dad never used it because he thought it would put him to sleep and drive off the road. I found the exact opposite, pure stress and anxiety, always somebody cutting into your safe follow zone, always a traffic jam/wreck ! Always something, if anything it kept me wide awake looking for the hazards it was creating!
I also don't for one minute think that we couldn't have improved mechanical and carb efficiency in the same amount of time.
With phone attached to the radio you can carry on conversations via phone or text without ever having to take your eye off the road or hands off the wheel. It's the people who hold onto and touch their phone that's a problem nowadays. What do I need my phone connected into the radio for? Why do I need a back up camera?
I'm surprised to hear that you even carry a cell phone based on your comments in this thread. What do I need my phone connected into the radio for?
I inquire, how are you posting on the forum? Smart phone, tablet, Ipad, computer? And Tesla's burn to ground in a wreck! Lithium is far more volitile than gasoline ever hoped to be!
As for me, I read and post using a computer. NOT my TRUCK!I inquire, how are you posting on the forum? Smart phone, tablet, Ipad, computer?
