What do we need the IC chips for any way? We built successful vehicles for decades without them!
I think we need to take a step back, and stop putting all this electronic stuff in vehicles! It's the stuff that is always going wrong nowdays ! Consumable items like brakes starters and alternators always need replacement. All the chips do is make it expensive and confusing to repair. The technology has not advanced performance enough, pollution enough, to make a real difference!

Furthermore: Electric is not an environmental answer either, Power grids are already struggling, and burning vast amounts of coal, and diesel power to dig the coal !

The zero emissions fools who drive Tesla's are ignorant !

You do not need to be on your phone in your car ! We lived without that feature for decades !

We don't need electronics in cars !

Disagree with you on that stuff. Just cause things were done in past, doesn't mean we should keep doing them.

Somethings are nice. Some are just dumb. The van and suv, I have/had. if you turn on cruise, it will start slowing down
if it would sense something in front of you. Then it would jump up fast to old speed. Sun would effect it, color of car/truck, rain, snow.
I hacked the software on both and turned that crap off.

I will never buy a 'self' driving car. I hope I'm long dead before that is normal. 360 camera's are nice. But rest, I dislike.

I really like my Rebel with 12inch screen and options.

You couldn't be more wrong. Electronic fuel injection alone has had a huge impact in performance and fuel economy. And emission control to the extent it is now wouldn't be possible without computers controlling everything. Safety is also much better than it used to be because of computers. Good luck getting people to give up their adaptive cruise control, head-up display, and parking sensors LOL. I do agree that we can and did get along without computer controlled vehicles for a long time. But saying we could go back to that and retain the same level of performance, emissions control, and safety is like saying we could shut down the power grid and go back to cooking over fires and living in huts.

Lol yeah I'm with you, I love having the balance of old and new but I have daily driven my old buick even just for 3-4 months over summer before when I was younger and it's no picnic. Sure, it's doable and I like having it as an extra option, but my truck really takes away a lot of fatigue for how much we drive. I would be exhausted (way more so) daily driving that old car that I love dearly.

Like most things in life, I say go for variety/balance!

Well maybe I'm in the minority! I've never found cruise control to be particularly useful . it would work fine if everyone else on the road cooperated. I have found it to be near dangerous. My dad never used it because he thought it would put him to sleep and drive off the road. I found the exact opposite, pure stress and anxiety, always somebody cutting into your safe follow zone, always a traffic jam/wreck ! Always something, if anything it kept me wide awake looking for the hazards it was creating!

I also don't for one minute think that we couldn't have improved mechanical and carb efficiency in the same amount of time.

Disagree if you want, it's a free country. I never said carburetor efficiency couldn't be improved. But at the end of the day, carb admustment is at best a compromise. It's at the mercy of changing environmental and atmospheric conditions. It may be possible to improve carbs to account for those changing conditions, but it would require a computer. You see where I'm going with that LOL.

Allow me to rephrase what I really mean, I have no problem with ( some ) electronics being used to improve efficiency and performance. My problem is that nowdays, the use is extreme ! They have gone to the point of trying to keep people from working on their own vehicles. Every time you replace something, it has to be "Flash rammed" ! Nowdays most of the problems are "sensors"
this sensor , that sensor, multiple sensors ! Nothing wrong with the vehicle, the problems are electronic ! What do I need my phone connected into the radio for? Why do I need a back up camera? I get the GPS thing because when your going some place that you are not familiar with, but GPS have just as often sent me the wrong way.

With phone attached to the radio you can carry on conversations via phone or text without ever having to take your eye off the road or hands off the wheel. It's the people who hold onto and touch their phone that's a problem nowadays.
The back up camera you can put the ball under the trailer hitch on the first try or see how close your backed up to something.

I'm surprised to hear that you even carry a cell phone based on your comments in this thread. :D

We don't need computerized cars ! If you want it ? Fine, pay the extra thousands ! I would rather not buy that stuff. Radio and A/C is really the only luxury I need or want. I don't need or want people bothering me while I'm driving !

The real stupid thing nowdays are the new zero emmission laws ! While the cars might run on a battery and produce zero emissions! It's the dumbest thing I ever heard as more emissions will be emitted from the electric plants! ( which are already overtaxed ) !

Would i drive a 1956 Chevy with A/C from San Diego to Carlisle Pa to a special car show, Yes i would
But i rather drive 2016 Ram, pulling a trailer with a 1956 Chevy loaded on it to the same locations

True, i would not want auto darkening mirrors, heated seats & steering wheel, whatever that 360 stuff is, i don't need the Level 1 stuff

some chips are useful others are just luxury

If it was late 60's Nova, Camaro, Mustang(few others). I would rather drive them than my Truck.

But I do agree with you, we need some of these things. Hands free phone. Playing music on phone into Truck/Car Radio.
GPS is very nice, if your going somewhere new, or for traffic.
Some for engine, but in view they went way overboard.

Dumb park assist bark thing I turned on Rebel that slammed brakes cause of rain. don't need it(it's off now)

I use cruise control on long highway drives. But one vehicle I have, has auto detect crap. Can't turn it off. It slows you down
way far from vehicle in front of you. Then is speeds up really fast. Often fails or detects road barriers on corners.

As long as I'm dead before 'auto' driving cars become normal, I'm happy :)

I inquire, how are you posting on the forum? Smart phone, tablet, Ipad, computer?

I found out just how bad the chip shortage really is when I went to Chipotle for lunch the other day and they told me they were out of chips (true story).

As for me, I read and post using a computer. NOT my TRUCK!

As for the "new" electronic features that came on my truck:
- I have turned off Parksense, I am tired of getting whiplash when the brakes slam on for a bush.
- Android Auto is disabled because it keeps switching to my phone when I want to listen to the FM radio, which is most of what I listen to.
- Ram cant get the one feature I want to work: the trailer reverse steering control, which came with the towing package.
- I do like the rear camera and 8 inch screen for lining up the trailer hitch.
- I don't use the on screen controls for AC or much of anything else, and I don't like how I have to dive deep into on screen menus to adjust the tone on the radio and the A/C.
- I use bluetooth and the truck's microphone and speakers during phone calls, but certainly not the truck's voice command or phone menu functions, which don't recognize anyone in my family's voice. Its so bad as to be comical.

I didn't order smart cruise control, Navigation, lane assist, or much of anything else. I already own a GPS designed for RVs which does use my phone's Hotspot function to get weather and traffic updates and it has its own speaker.
