But I see all these posts about an oil catch can? What does it do? Benefits? Does it make changing the oil easier?

did you read thru the threads? it's a device used to help trap oil that moves thru the PCV. In this case, it removes the oil so it's not mixed in with the air and gas during combustion when the motor is running.

Shadowhawk, but what's the benefit of it? Is it just something preventitive or does it improve performance?

well, that excess oil can gunk up your valves. So, it keeps your engine cleaner because you're not burning that oil.

Ty sir that is what I was trying to figure out, appreciate it! I mean the name itself says what it does, I just didn't understand the benefit of it. Now I do.

Preventative. Helps keep the TB and intake clean. 1000 miles, midwinter in MN and this is what the can kept out of the TB.

it's more useful when the motor has more miles on it, and things start to wear out, like piston rings. I've got 18K miles on my motor. I want one, and will probably do one this summer but I'm barely past break in on my motor :)

600 miles on the motor. New truck in Oct last year. 1000 miles on the collection. It's milky from cold temps and short trips. Condensation in the oil that doesn't get burned off during shorter trips.

I don't even have 15k on my truck yet and you'd be surprised how much crap it catches. My 800 mile dump looked like the pic above and was about 1/4 full on the can. Mostly condensation I'm sure, but smelled of oil and gas also.

Yup. I'm sold. Read the "$42 Catch Can" tread. No need to spend $150

I've read it. I want to relocate my oil filter, too. So both should have nice robust hose lines. That jumps your price up a bit from that $42. I also like the idea of a valve at the bottom of the can, rather than screwing it off/on.

So, that may be a bit confusing. Installed the can at 600 miles on the motor. 1600 miles at first check.

Yes. I believe mine was roughly $80 Came with good hoses, Z bracket and dump valve. Honestly, I find it easier to just remove the can than to get a cup or something under the valve.

my plan as to run a long hose down to where the oil filter would be, so I can just dump them both at the same time.

As far as the drain hose goes, thinking it may drip residual oil on the garage floor for a couple days after each use...maybe not. Either way, the standard mount location is pretty easy to get to. I'm not lifted.

Chances are you're going to be dumping it monthly so you probably don't want to have to crawl under your truck to do so. Mount it somewhere up high where it's easy to get at from topside.
