Recently bought an 06 dodge ram 5.7 hemi for a fixer upper work truck so I can take it easy on my cummins. Noticed coolant was low so I topped it off, and I wasn't paying attention but I ended up buying and adding the premix coolant, that supposedly works with all models in the system. And I have been having issues with the coolant temp going from normal operation to a very high temp back down to normal. In short it is swinging from normal to high fairly fast so I don't know what exactly is going on, I think it is the coolant. Any ideas guys?

This only started happening immediately after you added the pre-mix coolant?

I could be wrong, but I highly doubt the additional of a bit of pre-mix coolant would cause an immediate temp swing like that... Just doesn't make sense in my opinion.

I have seen people pour in a lot of different crap into their cooling system from my time in retail auto parts back in the college days... Pond water, head gasket sealing products, green into Dex-cool, Dex-cool into Toyota's and Honda's... While the above mentioned situations are not recommended and will most likely have bad long term effects, I have never seen it immediately jack up a cooling system.

Some other things to consider:

1. air in the system
2. faulty temperature sending unit
3. faulty gauge or wiring
4. Faulty thermostat

Any other opinions?

My guess is the thermostat is acting up.

I would add worn out waterpump impeller to the bottom of yor list , and radiator hoses collapsing.
