On vacation, perform service message pops up. Go to dealer and without looking at anything I get told it’s the crankcase filter and it’s $300. WTF! Do it or not! 75k miles, 14 3500. No idea where filter is located.

Thanks

None of my cummins are anywhere near that mileage. But I do remember seeing posts on here about that filter. Its the large thing on the top, front of the engine/ valve cover area. Had no idea how much it was, but I do now.

I would definitely check one of the online stores for this part. My fave place is : dieselfiltersonline.com

That crankcase filter is right on top of the engine.

Once you change it, how to reset the light:
PERFORM SERVICE INDICATOR - RESET
Unless reset the “Perform Service” message will display on the EVIC each time you turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position to indicate a emission maintenance is required. To reset the “Perform Service” indicator system (after performing the scheduled maintenance) refer to the following procedure:
1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Do not start engine).
2. Press and release the brake pedal two times.
3. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly two times within 10 seconds.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.
NOTE: If the indicator message illumination when you start the vehicle, the “Perform Service” indicator did not reset. If necessary repeat this procedure.

That's insane. The filter is about $60-$75 depending on where you fine it and only takes about an hour and a small socket set to do the work. No need to pay that much to get it done at the dealer.

Filter is $58 on Amazon and it's pretty easy to change. My 2016 CCV is due soon, message pops up at 67,500 miles on my truck.

$300 is expensive but anything the dealer does will cost you. Just wait until you get home and do it yourself if you have the ability

Sadly, you know the Service Adviser told him how critical it was to change it. I bet dealer cost is no more than $40 for the filter plus an hour labor. Should be a $150 job, tops.

I just replaced mine this morning on my 2016... took about 20 minutes. 12 bolts to remove and replace. Filter was $54 from Rock Auto.

It's amazing how many people come here with a problem or a gripe, only to never be seen again. The OP has never been back since the original post. :Wedgie:

Changed mine yesterday. Twelve 8mm bolts. 4 on the bat wing and 8 on the CCV cover. Pull out the dipstick and unscrew the oil fill cap. I also removed hose clamp and hose on the passenger side to make it easier to flip the cover up. Whole thing took 30 minutes.
