I wanted a flat area in the passenger compartment so my dogs had a place to move around comfortably.
I have a 2012 Ram 4X4 Crewcab. This is what my back seat area looked like before I started

I went to HomeDepot and bought a 4x8 sheet of 3/4 plywood and cut it to shape. It's square on 3 sides with 'bump-out' on the side that faces the front of the vehicle. Then I routered the edges.

I used carpet squares and a pneumatic stapler to carpet the board.

I cut a couple pieces of 2x12 at an angle that I attached as legs. I positioned the two legs at the front of the board. I angled the legs so the board would be pushed back against the rear of the cab when there is weight. I added one leg in the center.

I laid the board down in my truck and it's been great. Not attached physically to the truck. If I need to remove it I just move the front seats forward and pull it out.
