I have a 96 Ram and recently started having problems with the cruise control. Everything was working fine and then the cruise started to turn off when I would touch the break. Not just disengage but it would actually turn off as if I had pushed the “off” button. When tried to turn it on it would only work for intermittently, sometimes it would stay on for a while and I could set the speed, other times it would come on and then almost immediately shut off. I drove it for a while like this, parked it and when I came back it worked fine. Then after a while of driving it started cutting out again. I was thinking vacuum at first but the way it’s acting has me leaning toward an electrical issue. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Seems to me like the clock spring causes some issue with the cruise control.
But I've not worked at the Stealership for almost 15 years & We didn't work on but a few gas rigs. We were a DIESEL shop working on 100 diesels a week.
But you might google up The clock spring issues . But on a truck that old a lot can be going wrong.
& I'm also saying find a TECH / Mechanic that has the computer software to hook up & into your system .. Does it every set the CEL.

As stupid as this may sound it is worth a check lol
Check your third Brake Light Bulbs ! On my 2011 HHR if a Bulb went out it would mess with the Cruise Control !
So a Quick and maybe cheap fix !
PLEASE Update what you do find !

On my RAM I just had the Clock Spring ,harness and switch Changed because the left side steering wheel buttons would not work and the horn would no beep! FYI The Finger worked fine but not loud enough to hear LOL
Cruise worked fine

The first thought that comes to mind when someone mentions Cruise Control issues.

I think that there may be a ODB2 DTC from something in the vehicle.

If anything causes a Code to register, the Cruise Control will not function properly
