Hey y'all, I've been looking through the forums and Googling but I can't find a solid answer. Short story long, my CV axle broke of course at the worst time, 40 miles from town at camp and I don't want to replace it out there in the cold. Can I just remove it and drive it back to town safely? Or is there another way around this just to limp it home at highway speeds?

Yes but leave the cup in the wheel bearing side. You need that bolted in to the bearing to hold everything together if you don't it'll likely come apart you can pull the diff side one out though.

you dont need to leave the cup in, thats now how the front wheel bearing works on these 1500s.

And yes you can just take one CV out.

Oh yeah! I forgot the hub was pressed into the bearings on this one. Good catch
Thank you guys! One more dumb question, if I remove the axle am I gonna be losing diff fluid?

The intermediate shaft on the driver side needs to be left in place. The passenger side is part of the diff assembly.

Hhmmm…40 miles on a flatbed wrecker wouldn’t be all that expensive, or 40 miles on a rented car carrier or a dolly behind a buddy’s truck. Weigh that against potential damage to the fron diff, and if it were my truck I’d be snagging a dolly and borrowing a truck from a bud. But, that’s me so you do you.

Best,
RI
