So my buddy has a 99 Dodge Ram 5.9 l, his head is cracked between the intake valve and exhaust valve, when he tried to order new heads they said there's a bunch of different ones and they need a casting number before they send him one. Can anyone tell me the location of the numbers? I found a few different numbers. I'll try to post pictures

Always curious on these posts - was the engine pulled apart for a cylinder misfire or a coolant loss, or was it pulled apart for other reasons, and then the cracks were discovered. Reason I say this is I've seen countless Magnum engines that ran fine when pulled - no misfires, no coolant loss - and upon teardown the cracked heads were discovered. It just seems like the cracks don't spread into the water jackets, and don't really affect the engines running. I know it goes against common logic, but we quit replacing those cracked heads years ago - we would just do a street valve job on them and re-use them, and we never had any issues from doing so. I know a lot of shops that have had success doing the same. I'd hate to guess how many heads got replaced for those cracks that would have performed just fine re-using them.

it was misfiring in cylinder one and running rough with some smoke out the tail pipe. when we pulled the spark plug the diode was melted off, before pulling the head we changed plugs and wires, tried marvel mystery oil thinking it was a stuck valve, changed distributor cap and button, nothing seemed to help.

Did you check the bottom of the intake to see if the plenium gasket had failed? That could cause your symptoms.

I ordered a set of remanufactured stock cylinder heads from a company that deals with just cylinder heads, and they didn't need the casting #'s, just the year, make, model and engine.
