Hi Guys, I have a 2012 RAM 1500 with Quad headlights. I wanted to make the Parking lights into DRL's, Ive been told by a Lighting Product seller that my truck does not have the circuit for it, about the only thing i could do is have the Dealer set up the high beams for the DRL's.

Has anyone done this? and what do you think about it.

I believe with alfaobd you can enable parking lights as drl's. Search 06-12 alfaobd. You'll find a thread that should have your answer. If you don't want to go that route, then the dealer should be able to enable the highs at reduced power as the drl's

Can't believe that the US hasn't made DRL's mandatory by now. We've had it here for almost 30 years and it makes a huge difference.

I highly suggest using Alfa OBD to activate them. The dealers near me wouldn't mess with it. I did it myself in my driveway and have an onscreen toggle for daytime running lights on my uconnect thanks to doing it myself.

The DOT didn't find enough significant reason to make them mandatory.

If everyone has them, they become less effective as they don't stick out. Much like how on a construction site everyone wearing HiViz clothing, it no longer is attention grabbing.
Nowadays the bigger problem is keeping people from paying attention to their phones, no amount of lights will help with that.Screenshot_20200201-154951~2.jpg

If you have a smart phone or tablet then you can download an app called OBD JScan. It is free but will need to purchase a Bluetooth device to read it. I think I have 30 bucks for mine on amazon.

Once you do then it is 18 bucks I believe to purchase the vin license for your vehicle. That’s so you can’t pass it around from person to person. So all in all you have just over 50 bucks in it but you can just about do anything you want from turning drl lights on to trouble shooting codes.

How in hell did they come up with those stats with-out DRLs being in use.I wouldn't trust that test at all,as there is no way in hell to judge how effective DRL's are in reducing crashes if nobody has them.If you ask me that test is basically useless with-out any DRL's in common use to make a judgement call on.There's the odd DOT test I think they are out to lunch on,and that's one, lol. Plus that's going on 12 years old now.

Yes it can be done making parking lights(the amber ones) your DRL. I did that on my 2012 Ram 2500 ST. If you go to the AlfaOBD for the 2012s that’s where I found the howto. It’s been sometime ago so my memory cells are kaput on how to do it. It’s easy peezee.

Can't say I agree with their findings. You will always see lights coming but you may not always see a vehicle without them. What you have to watch for here are the old lumps that the DRL's don't work on anymore and the texters.

why use high beams for DRLS? some cars are just to bright even in day light.

How much do those old lumps stick out? I bet you notice them sticking out more than the vehicles around them with lights on.
There is times and conditions that benefit from having lights on. Most of the day to day daytime driving it isn't going to matter.
The bigger problem now is the people who pay way too much attention to their phones, and it's not just texting. People get lost in a phone call, clueless to everything going on around them.

What did you have to do for the display toggle? I have activated DRL on my 2016 but can’t find anything in the display.
