Almost did not post anything to how stupid I feel....but I have questions.

I had to go jump another truck yesterday. Turns out im and idiot, After he put the jumpers on the dead truck CORRECTLY, I hooked them on my trucks passenger side battery INCORRECTLY. Yup, I did that. So they did not stay on very long but wow what a spark. I had a little cotton looking ring between the cable end and the base of the post as well as so spray on red stuff to help prevent corrosion. Dont know if this contributed to what happened next or not. But the the sparking did not stop after the cables came off. On the positive cable on the passenger side battery the cable end was gettting eaten up! It got to the point that the reason it seems that it was still sparking was that, the power from the drivers side battery was trying to get to the accessory wires on the passenger side battery. Problem was the cable end was so burnt and eaten up it was arching from itself to itself!

So I pulled the cables off the drives side to kill everything. I put the bad positive cable end back on the post got some washers and tightened it down, but I left the negative off. The arcing stopped. I tossed on the cables and the good battery and got her home, checking every once and a while. No issues. Once home I pulled all the all the cables off but the bad one.

Now I know I need to replace that cable end. My plan is to pull that cable out. Heat the end up, pull the end off, and replace it with something from NAPA.

But how about my battery? Did I **** up the internals enough that its unsafe?

Im guessing everything else is okay but any advice would be great. Sorry for the long rambling post.

i would imagine you would need new internals, because arcing is no good.

You basically shorted the battery out, and thats what happens when there are no fuses inline. Theres no telling how long the battery will last. If you dont want to chance being stranded I would replace it. Keep a look out for electrical problems, as damage to your electrical system is likley to have occured.

Both batteries may be shot but you can test them.

The arcing was caused by a short, negative to positive - positive to negative between the trucks. Remember, through that through the electrical system your two batteries are connected.

I'd be more worried about sensors, control modules, the PCM, etc...

Will the truck start? Do the gauges work?

okay so we got the bad cable end off and put one one from NAPA. Put it all back together. And all gauges seem normal. Only issue im finding is that my efans wont turn off. So for now ive just pulled one of the wires off the fans fuse. Im suppose to be moving tomorrow....so this really sucked. Still have a bunch to pack, move to the trailer, and then clean. Did not need this. WaFI I am. Plus its cold out and now im just trying to get warmed up before I do all this crap I dont want to do.

Good news(kinda) is that this is just one fore reason to upgrade all my cable and wiring. Bad news is that these batteries are pretty much BRAND NEW and they are expensive.

Get the batteries tested when you get the chance. They may be OK or they may be marginal. Good luck

I was working on the truck one day and set a wrench down without looking and set right across both post. With a quick spark the wrench blew across the driveway
You could see where it had started to weld itself to the battery

Never had any problems till a year and a half later the batteries died but they were 7 years old and ready to be replaced

Thanks for the help Cody. Like I said im paranoid and when I was in high school and did everything on the cheap I was left with a dead vehicle way too many times. Now I avoid it like the plague.

So just make sure you don't reverse the jumper cables next time, Reece. :D

I am sure all damage went to the battery just have them test using one of those load testers. Stop stressing nothing you can do to change what happened anyhow.

A few years back, my buddy dropped a set a pliers across the +/- posts on my old Nissan pickup. Pliers were too heavy to be blown off. Put on one hell of a firework show. Pliers were welded to the posts.

Other than the pliers and battery, not much damage was done. Had to replace a few fuses, that was about it.

I hope everything is clear in your truck.
