I know from this forum that Redline is one of the best oils, but I thought PUP was as well??? Wasn't it a go-to oil? I thought pop on here had said guys were buying it almost in bulk when they saw it on sale?? So PUP is NOT a good alternative to Redline then?? Up here Canadian Tire stores throw it on sale 40% quite a few times a year, so it's very easy to get vs Redline, which is never on sale.
Well, i replaced my OEM oil after just a few mile, ran nothing but Penzoil Ultra Platinum,, dealer oils changes, and my LIfter chewed up my camshaft.
They fixed it, under warranty, and did an oil change , at that time, with Dino oil. Truck actually chattered worse than it had when I took it in. Way worse.
Just did a oil change, last week. Was planning on switching over to Redline and doing my own oil changes but it;s cold, I;m Old and had football to watch. So I took it to teh Dealership.
They used PUP and wheel motor is quiet, once more, I do not trust it.
Just my Opinion, based on my own Experince, with this Hemi.
Yes, PUP will lube Lifters, very well, and quiet the lifter chatter, right now. ...ONCE THE OIL PUMP LIFTS THE OIL TO THE LIFTER. Now, Just a hint of tsk'ing, at start up.
What it does not do is stick around the bottom roller or the pin that keeps the damn roller on the lifter. So when I do start it up, the lifter does not wear out its pin and roller, at the bottom of the lifter. Over time, this lack of lubrication causes the lifter to fail.
From all the research I have done, again, my own thoughts on this topic, is just like SYnthetic oils lube better than DIno oils, so too does the Moly of Ester based oils stick around longer on the parts it touches and protects them better. When there is Oil "Bleed down:. from teh Heads , back into the Oil Pan, through Sitting or what have you.
Have a ton of friends who swear by this or that brand of synthetic.
again, their own experiences.
You name, I got Car Guys, who swear by it.
BUT, none of them have Hemi's. Mostly High Dollar import cars.
My Hemi died on PUP.
These guys running Redline are having long term luck with Redline.
Now, I am sure there are guys who are having the same long term luck with PUP.
I did not.
Not sure why not.
Was it just a bad lifter?
Was it the reason stated above, that since PUP has little to no moly, lack of Moly caused the lifter failure?
I do not know, not for sure, I am not a Scientist.
I do know that I plan on switching over to redline and that Royal Purple filter too.
Why? Because I ran PUP oil and OEM FIlter and damn cam got chewed up.
Next Cam and LIlfter repair is on me, my Dime. I would rather spend a little more per oil change, and feel good about it, then get popped for a cam and lifter repair.
Hope this helped.
PS
Thank you for bringing this up.
Reminded me to get some LIquid Moly and put it with my PUP.
Not sure if its going to help, or not, but sure made me feel better.
PS PS
O.P. Sorry for getting off topic .
