So we went skiing this weekend an came to the realization that trying to change music with the phone in the drawer under the radio was not working well. Looked around at some to the phone mounts on the market an did like how or were then mounted. so this is what I came up with.

Made a mount with a 3 inch screw, some bolts with nylon, 2 pieces of flat metal with pre drilled hole ( it is from an erector set but you can get it from lowes) and some neodymium magnets. I put one piece of the metal in the case of the phone. This is what it looks like for now. When I do my center counsel I will dress it up a little better.

Drilled a hole an bolted in place

An the phone in place.

Most people wont want to drill a hole but I don't mind because I wont be taking the mount out. Plus I will be keep this truck long enough that this really wont hurt the value enough to worry about.

Nite ize makes a mount similar to that called a Steelie mount I have one on my phone and it works awesome ..... And requires no drilling ...... It all depends on the strength of the magnet , one to just hold your phone is not going to hurt it... This is the part on my phone . I cut the rubber on the otter box so it sticks to plastic not rubber... It comes with 3m double sided tape

had this same kind of thing on my avalanche for about 5 years with no ill effect on the phone. The biggest problem you run into with using magnets and electronics is if said electronic uses magnets such as older style hard drives for an example, even then you need a much larger/stronger magnet then these to do damage. Plus there are a few magnet style phone mounts and cases on the market. I am personally not to worried about.

Yeah I looked at those. The only problem was the location I wanted to mount it. Had to stick out about 2 inches to clear everything.

Magnets are really bad for smartphones. They effect the compass, gyros, and the accelerometers. Especially rare earth neodymium magnets. The idea where you have it mounted is nice though.

Before drilling a hole in my dash, I'd consider a Bayou Goat Mount. Check it out!

Also, I'd worry about the magnets affecting my phone or it not holding with some of our "Crater Lake"-like potholes this winter!:roflbow:

I looked at those. I just really did like it up on the dash like that. I was also worried about our craters as well went looking for some with no problems yet.

These must not be strong enough. No effect to any of the last 3 smart phones these magnets have been used on. I do remember reading something about it could effecting the compass when I first starting doing this but I personally never had a problem.

disregard the grinder slip lol

I cut out the case for the metal tab...not the steadiest hand here either lol ,, the case thickness is unchanged.. In fact I could probably used a thicker metal tab, no need though, It holds like a champ.

Here's the positioning of mine. Solid as a rock and no holes required. No glue to remove if I ever take it off...

Good find, thanks.

You guys seen the new generation of cell phone holders that incorporate Qi wireless charging? I got one Qi charger a couple months ago, like it so much that I bought one for my desk at work also. Basically you buy a "card" looking thing that contains a coil of wire and stick it against your cell phone's battery, assuming your phone is wireless charging compatible. Then the charger sits on your desk and all have to do to charge your phone is simply lay it on the charger. No wire to connect. Is cheap and darn convenient.

So now cell phone holders are coming out that incorporate Qi chargers. So when my truck shows up, I'm getting one.
Amazon.com: qi car charger: Cell Phones & Accessories

For those looking into this the charger itself is generic. It's the coil card that goes in your phone that you need to confirm is compatible with your phone.

This is similar to my charger at home. I like it because it's conveniently shaped like the phone itself so getting the phone in the right place on the charger is a no-brainer.
Amazon.com: Anker® Wireless Charger Qi-Enabled USB Charger for Nexus 5 / 7 / 4; Lumia 920, 928; Samsung, iPhone, LG, HTC and Other Qi-Enabled Phones and Tablets - White: Cell Phones & Accessories

This is similar to my charger at work. I don't like it as much because it's much smaller than the phone so the phone sits on it only precariously and I always have to move the phone around a bit to get the charger and coil positioned correctly.
