Do you buy an additional warranty at time of buying truck?

Looking at buying a new 2025 Laramie and wondering what others think of buying an additional warranty at time of purchase? They come with 3 year, 36,000 miles. I didn’t buy anything additional when we bought my wife’s new Chevy Traverse and not looking to if I buy this new 2025 Laramie. But curious of others thoughts.

When I bought by 2014 new the guy in finance started telling me how these things run forever and was not uncommon to go well over 200,000 miles and then in the next breath started pushing their extended warranties. Really irritated me. I never had any issue with my 2014 for over 10 years. Anyway do you buy anything additional at the time of purchase or do something later or how do you approach it?

The 3yr/36,000mls is bumper to bumper. You should also have a 5yr/60,000mls for power train, plus the corrosion one.

I've gotten extended warranties before, for both used- and new cars. It's an insurance.... you get it and hope you'll never need it. Nothing more, nothing less.
Some people say don't buy it (it's a scam) and they rather save some money and use that fund for repairs.

Either way, it's not a scam, just read the fine print on what exactly they cover.

If the dealership calls, they can authorize it right over the phone, no big deal. But what they need is an open workorder, so people don't randomly call and gauge what and how much they'd cover.

I always get mopar maximum care. I'm buying it again next month for my 2025. I keep my trucks a long time and I've always been in the green by the time the plan is over with. I never buy it at the dealer. I always buy it much cheaper online before I hit 12k miles. It gets more expensive after 12k miles and even more so after 24k up to 3y/36k.. They also offer coverage beyond the allotted time and miles. If somehow you are reaching the end of the plan and never used it, for a small fee, you can have the dealer recertify your truck and maximum care will extend the plan. Or you can opt to get a portion of what you paid if you never use it. At least that's how it worked in previous years.

I have purchased the MOPAR MaxCare warranties in the past. Some have paid for themselves, others haven't.

Really, it's a bit of a gamble but considering that you are basically buying insurance to avoid the cost of some loss in the future.

Yes I do / don't. Over the last 8 or so years I don't keep a vehicle long enough to require one. If I plan on keeping them longer then the 3/36 I will buy one.

With all these new electronics in these things I would not even think twice about buying one, if I was going to keep it.

I purchased one shortly before my 3 years was up. Too much expensive electronic stuff to go wrong. First time I ever purchased one. Don't bother purchasing it from the dealer - or, go armed with a quote from Ganger Motors which @GeauxinUp mentioned and see if your dealer will match it!

I purchased one as my first year of ownership was approaching. So far though, 20 months and have only been back to the dealer once for a recall notice.

I bought the best Mopar warranty I could from the dealership when I bought my truck in January '22.

I live in Canadastan and the warranties up here aren't as good. It's the equivalent of a 5-year/60K mile, bumper to bumper.

I wish I had known about purchasing bargain online Mopar warranty deals in the first year of ownership.

I have just over 1.5 years remaining and I have almost broke even.

I've had a door lock actuator fail and one other incident with the heated steering wheel that required a clockspring and a wiring harness replacement.

I saw the internal invoice for the heated steering wheel repair, IIRC, it was about $1400.

Due to the complexity of the electronics, I'd always choose to go with the 5-year bumper to bumper just for the piece of mind.

I may not get my money's worth from the warranty cost but I don't appreciate the risk of suddenly having to pay out more money to keep my truck on the road.

This truck is the only new vehicle I've ever bought unless you include a few motorcycles in the '90s.

From what I've seen in the past 5 years, any future purchases will be used.

Kind of funny that the previous poster has never bought warranties, I've always bought them.

I would with a 2025 5th gen with the new hurricane I6. I would not with a 4th gen with a hemi.

As others mentioned the length of ownership is a key consideration you also have to commit to absolutely maintain the service schedule on time and keep the receipt. A late oil change or radiator flush can cut your throat.

I'm 68 years old. Through the decades, and the purchase of many new and used vehicles, I have purchased 2 extended warranties, neither one was ever used, let alone recoup the premium, so I lost on both gambles. Decided to never do it again.

I was offered one for my 2014 Ram for about $8,000. So far it would have paid for only one exhaust manifold repair, and that warranty would be about to expire.

Some folks have reported having to replace and engine or transmission, and those folks probably made out on the deal.

I bought my truck used, with 23000 miles on it. Not at a Ram dealer. Bought the warranty, concerned about the tech and electronics. Truck now has 108000 miles on it. Never had a problem I could use the warranty for. One set of brakes, two sets of tires, oil and filter changes, new wipers and thats it. Most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

Also if you have a denied claim or funny business contact the warranty company yourself. I had a denied claim at a ford dealer when I spoke to the warranty company I learned the claim had never been submitted to them.

I read an analysis once that found if you never buy an extended warranty on anything - your vehicle(s), home appliances & heating/AC, electronics, etc. - you'll be ahead in the long run. You may get bit every now and then with paying to repair something, but overall you'll save money.

I never buy a vehicle extended warranty. I self insure. First, by (hopefully) buying a good quality vehicle, and second by making sure I can afford repairs if I end up needing them outside the warranty. The very nature of extended warranties are set up worse than a blackjack or poker table in a casino. At a BJ table, assuming you have a reasonable knowledge how to play, the odds are about 49-42 in favor of the house, and if you're really good you can narrow that to about a 46-45 house advantage. With an extended warranty you might have 60% never use it, and another 25% use it less than the income brought in by the warranty - maybe higher than that. There's only going to be a 5-10% chance that you will use anywhere near the cost of the warranty. So from just a purely financial perspective they make virtually no sense.

That said, some people aren't good with budgeting money, or they'd rather just make extra payments and feel like they have piece of mind when it comes to these things. So that might make a difference. Just know that getting something fixed under an extended warranty isn't always just bring it in and don't pay anything - plenty of people end up having to fight to get things covered, especially if it's not a factory extended warranty.

In any case, there's no right answer. It just depends on what makes you sleep at night.

I did this time for peace of mind. It was certified preowned with 6000 miles. I extended the 3 / 36k to 7/100k and the certified has power train for 7yr/100k

I figured for $2400 with a $100 deductible if i need it once it pays for itself
