I've seen some mics for REW require a pre-amp. Do I need to buy anything else besides this?

Thanks

Nope. That's why I went with the umm-6. All that other crap confused the hell out of me. Umm6 comes with a calibration file, all u do is load it into REW and plug mic into usb port.

Well for smartphone use, you got the right one. We would have recommended the umm-6 had you waited longer than 8 minutes after installation to completely re do the whole setup. Lololololo

David and Brad, now that's some funny $hit there.

Any opinions on the MiniDSP UMIK-1? It's a couple bucks cheaper and includes a tripod.

And that's alright David, I almost cancelled my DEQ order in favor of a RF 3sixty.3 today. Only because it does a lot of the configuring for you but then I thought more about it. If I have a unit do things for me, then I will never fully understand what is going on.

I think that is why I like the DEQ, it is basic and raw, anything that has to be done, has to be done by me with a reason in mind.

REW is nice, but unless you're competing, the audiotools ( none free version ) works very very well with the Dayton mic. This is coming from a guy you had his very own AudioControl RTA that I paid $1500 for. LOL.

The 3sixty.3 has been known for noise issues and many people have blown their speakers not knowing what there doing during the initial setup. The DEQ.8 will work just fine with out all that non sense.

I hear ya lizard. I do want to keep it simple though REW on the computer along with the DEQ software does seem convenient to me. At this point I am in for a penny so I might as well go for a pound.

Reviews on the UMIK-1 seem pretty positive, I think I am going to snatch one of them up. Second thought, scratch that. Coming from Hong Kong not for me. Dayton UMM-6 wins! LOL

Done! Found a coupon code for parts-express ROCKYTEN to save ten bucks. Brought it down to the UMIK-1 price so that works.

I've heard good things about it. Never used it personally. I don't think it would be an issue.

Whether ur competing or not, u got the DSP to get the best sound possible so may as well get as much out of it as you can. Phone apps are good for basic tuning without DSP. The iPhone mic couldn't register anything below 250hz accurately. No matter what i did, the response never really changed below that on the phone. Spending $80 on the usb mic yielded 10 times better results than I ever got on the iPhone.

I've had no issues measuring with my iPhone 6 below 250hz using the Dayton Mic. Not sure with the phone mic, but I will try it this weekend for giggles. I have another app that does 1/6 octave, I will see how accurate it is.

The problem with tuning is that you can't always go by what the RTA tells you and you must, in the end, fine tune by ear. There is just no way around it. Any system I've heard that someone tried to get it flat and follow the basic RTA template has always sounded lifeless and dull. Best thing is get it close and start tuning by ear. It's hard...some people just don't know what there "hearing" or looking for. Be careful, your ears will trick you after just a few minutes you've made adjustments to only find out next time you get back in the car and listen to a good track that its horrible. Tuning with an RTA can become very addictive and before you know it you spend all your free time trying to find that "perfect" sound that isn't ever really achievable in a car

Spend just a few minutes on DIY and you can see what I'm talking about. People constantly trying and swapping out equipment like underwear. ****. I look forward to Monday and Tuesday just to see all the gear for sale.....they yanked out they replied two weeks earlier has the "best" they've had. Too funny

I must admit though, I do want to try out some AMT's....so I will be picking up a set for giggles.......LOL. Never heard them and open, airy, super wide stage and superb off axis is all you hear.

Maybe my iPhone 4s wasn't audiophile friendly or pocket lint was jammed in the mic. Haven't tried it with the 6 before.

I've spent a good amount of time getting a completly flat response and it sounded like Oprah queefing in my ears. Lol fkn terrible. So I agree, after a point, you just gotta go with what you like. In my opinion, the best thing RTA and mic did for me was have left and right sides responses matching. I could never have done that by ear. I use all the target curves as a basis. Then from there, adjust bass mid and treble to my preference.

I think RTA is a good learning tool to help put the whole frequency response thing into perspective. It sure helped me. Then my DSP broke and I'm still waiting for it so I can get back at it.
