I'm thinking about putting a custom dual exhaust on my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.2l magnum. For components as of now I'm thinkin Gibson stainless steel headers, flowmaster super 44 mufflers, and either Megan racing or magnaflow hi-flow cats. I want to run an h pipe. I use my truck a lot for offroading if that helps at all. Any thoughts on components/advice?

Great choices so far. Stainless shorties and high flow cats are good, I'd pick a different muffler though. Something with a more straight through design like a magnaflow. H-pipe before the cats up front and use 2.25" pipe all the way back, no need for anything more.

Would there be any specific magnaflow that youd reccomend?

I've got magnaflow 40s on some cheap old shorty headers new factory cats with turndowns over the rear axle. I like it for the sound mostly. It doesn't have that loud cracking noise you hear out of most of our trucks. But really it's all about what you're wanting from it.

I strongly advise against true duals for off road. Dual is great for very high revs but you lose exhaust scavenging and cross pump resulting in a slight loss of low to mid range and its just more stuff to rip off on the trail

Op giver heck, almost the same setup I have. It helped when the motor was stock and it helps this motor. I run a 14" di/do Magnaflow sounds mellow at idle and light throttle after that its game on. I have changed it a bit over the years I don't use an H anymore and I now have twin cats lol. I do suggest to use two H's in the pipes one before the cats and one after the cats, best place for the 02's to go.

I have also ran two super 44's very aggressive mufflers in my op.

Gibson 306S headers.
2.25 stainless pipes, front to back.
Two Stainless steel Magnaflow cats #53005
One Stainless steel Magnaflow DI/DO muffler #11385
Dumped out the side before the rear tire.

Because you have the dual in dual out muffler does that eliminate the need for an h pipe? I was considering doing that but i wasnt sure if running only one muffler would make me loose power or make it sound weird or anything like that. But i kinda like the sound of your setup. Or would you reccomend that having two mufflers and two H's would be better? And if two mufflers are the way to go did you just do center in center out?

Yup and yup. Lol.

Not really, depends if you want it a little louder or not. Shorter if louder, longer if not.

Thats why you use crossover pipes, helps scavenging. Agreed on more stuff to rip off but oh well, better then any single set up imo.

I would use an h-pipe, definitely one before the cats. As Merc said, great spot for front o2. IMO you could use dual in dual out or two single mufflers, your choice it wont make a noticeable difference. Center in center out would prob be easiest for single mufflers.

You should at least run the front H in the pipes, I don't but that's me and my setup. One muffler will not take any power away compared to running two. Two ****'s = twice the cost and no need for two mufflers.

Btw as you read mine is all in stainless best way to go, do it once and forget it. If I was not happy with my system I would never have gone SS as it costs more. I also used SS band clamps much cleaner looking/sealing and will last a good long time, but also not cheap.

I have yet to ripp off my system it is tucked up nice and is out of harms way.

For simplicities sake Id just use a DI/DO muffler.

For a side exhaust, could get big tips as well. Heres my old single side pipe:

Merc, that stainless exhaust is just sexy. Lol.

I like it there but there are downfalls to having it there.

1; Exhaust residue is a pita to remove from that wheel
2; With my lift those are aimed right into a passanger cars side window, not very courteous to other drivers. As I live out in the boondocks its not a big deal, if I lived in a city I would put down turns on it.
3; If you live in the mountains you get a good reverb from them, can get annoying after a bit.

Thanks by the way.

Thanks Johnn123 so much better than seeing rusty pipes under it.

Honestly Id probably do just the one in the front, and throw the rear O2 a little farther back on one side. The front one is the one that helps the most.

Kinda only controls fuel trims.
