Dumb question, but just making sure.

I'm about to change the oil on my (new to me) 1500 5.7L. There are no tricks to worry about, are there? drains normally, filter off, replace, right?

Just make sure you get new filter on tight, many reported filter leaks due to loose filters.

Some guys loosen the filter then slide a freezer bag up over it to catch the oil that is going to go everywhere, some drill a hole in the bottom of the filter and drain it. Either way, I recommend brakekleen and some rags for clean up.

Thanks, guys (or gals, I guess). I got it done. I've been an F-150 driver for most of my adult life. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

I've done the freezer bag over the filter trick to keep a driveway clean and it works very well. I have to say, the Ram oil filter is pretty easily accessible, and it was pretty straightforward. I hope all required maintenance is as easy.

One thing I did use, is one of the K&N "wrench on" filters. It looks like it'll make things easy, as I couldn't get my old school filter wrench into position.

That nut that is spot-welded on the K&N filter is for removal, not installation. There have been cases where someone using that for installation has created leaks at the weld points.

Thanks, Ramnewbie. I didn't ***** it on, I guess you're right, it's a "wrench off" filter. I think it'll make it easy to get off.

There is currently a thread on oil filters in the engine section. You might take a look and see what oil filter is best suited for your truck. Interesting reading.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of k&n oil filters since I had one leak on me, threads weren't cut square with base plate so it wouldn't pull up square and seal. I used to use them alot but not anymore.
