Has anyone cut their stock grille to install a aftermarket grille insert?

Im talking about this kind: For 2009-2012 Dodge Ram 1500 Stainless Black Mesh Rivet Grille Grill Insert | eBay

The kind where you have to cut off the trademark Ram Crosshairs bars. Not the kind that are 4 piece inserts.

Anyone cut their grille up? If so, is it really noticable that you cut your grille or did the insert hide the cut areas?

Does anyone who did this have any pictures up close of the insert and where the cut marks are? Im just afraid im going to cut off the crosshairs and its going to be really noticable that there is cut marks out in the open.

From what I've heard that exact insert is very cheap thin plastic and warps very quickly resulting in a wavy grill. I personally have no experience with that insert but I've heard the same story from multiple people

As far as the cutting goes no you won't notice that you cut your grill up (as long as you do a decent job and don't hack it.)

I did it with no issues. Just tape it off and cut away.

If you have a border on the grille it will hide the cuts

Yes definitely as long as you take your time, mask off or Mark off exact lines etc the cutting is no biggie. My buddy had me do it to his 2017 F-350 kuz he was to scared and I cut just like that leaving only the border and it's flawless.. BUT, if your grill starts to warp and wave it's gunna look ghetto no matter how perfect your trimming is

Why would it warp and wave?

And i guess I'll look for a name brand insert. I bought a grille with the grille shell included from EAutoGrilles for my 2006 Ram and the quality was really nice for the $200 price. Had no issues with it, but this time around I want to keep my flame red shell.

Not saying you need to shell out tons to get a decent grill, just saying that specific one you posted I've seen lots of bad reviews on and all are about it warping after any kind of weather (hot summer or cold.winter.)

Definitely keep the flame red shell, sick color and matching shell IMO always looks best

While we're on the subject, I too was thinking about going with this grill style. What's holding me back at this point is seeing through the grill at all the components behind. I found a paramount grill for $300 in this style, but after scouring through photos, came to the determination that you can see through it? Anyone know if you can see through the higher end grills like T-Rex? Rather not spend the extra money if it's not needed... Been on a bender lately and need to simmer down lol.

Yea I've spent over $4k in the last month or two. Need to slow down but keep finding new **** I want lol.

You could always find a grille with smaller holes inbetween the metal mesh. You can see through these so easily because the opening between the mesh on the grille is big. Find a grille with a smaller mesh size.

I know the higher end ones typically offer different mesh sizes, so maybe that's key. Wonder if I can. Just spray paint everything behind the grill with some black engine paint. And don't feel bad I'm probably around the same number or worse lol

My advice? Get one that overlays you crosshairs first and see if you like it before you cut it up. I cut up mine and I hated it. Our grilles, I don't know if it's the shape or the wide openness of it but for our grilles it just doesn't look right. Going back to cross hairs or possibly a rebel or limited for some variation.

I'd love a rebel grill. The one I want has an LED bar at the bottom, but I didn't think the rebel grills fit. What are some overlay grills in the same style? You just confirmed my nervousness

I have a t-Rex grill which is what I posted above. You can see through it but that doesn't bother me. You can get a smaller mesh or you can just paint your coolant and washer reservoir to really stand or. [emoji3]

The Rebel grill will fit a 2012 perfect because of the shape, you just have to modify the side mounting points to your truck. There are some on eBay that are full replacement so you won't have to cut up your original. Go amazon prime you can alwaus return easy.

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/132179122673

There is a Rebel Replica grille now being made and sold on ebay. Looks really nice. It's for 13+ Rams.

They do make the raptor style grilles with the 3 leds on top. I'm sure they will make rebel style grills soon for our trucks.

Nice, didn't realize that was a Trex. Looks good and the led behind is a tempting idea as well.
