I'm trying to figure out why my engine temperature gauge completely shuts down on my way to work. It seems to do it at the same time almost every morning. The only thing I noticed that happens when it shuts off is the lights dim for a Split Second and I look down and my Gage just has two dashes and the needle is down. I can shut the truck off and the temp comes back on like nothing happened. Anyone else have this experience. 2015 ram PW 6.4l.

Only does it in the morning after being plugged in for a couple hours. Not sure what the block heater would have to do with it but an observation none the less. Never noticed it any other time

right now my '14 ecodiesel is in the shop for something similar. my coolant temp will go all bonkers when i come to a stop after driving over 45. was driving down the highway yesterday and we got stuck on construction traffic and we had to slow to a crawl. The electronic throttle service message came on and i noticed the coolant temp gauge was all the way to cool, digital read out was reading --. so that kicked the radiator fan into warp speed. took it to a dodge dealer and they changed the coolant temp sensor but the fault came back. now it looks to be either a wiring issue or the computer is taking a crap. either way thank god for extended warrenties.

That's indeed strange. Hope they get u sorted out quickly. I have set my block heater to shut off at the time I start the truck in the morning now. I think having it on and it running may be causing my issues.

My 14 Sport will do that every once in awhile, gauge loses the numbers and just goes to dashes, never have worried about it enough to take it in though,as it always resets with a key cycle. Mine only does it every so often, not daily like yours is doing. If you find out a reason or fix let me know, lol.

Hi, I too am experiencing this exact same problem.

My temperature gage will drop off to the bottom of the scale and the analog reading will read " -- ". I'm just wondering if anyone else has been able to find a root cause to this problem? I am driving a 2015 Ram 2500 6.4 Liter.

This behavior started recently with the really cold weather that we've being seeing ( - 30 Deg C ). I estimate that this event occurs about every second day.
If I stop the truck, put the truck into park, shut off the engine, and then re-start the engine, both gage and analog readings return back to normal.

What is really bizarre is that when I start driving down the road, the temperature will always fail after about 2 -3 minutes of driving. The engine temperature is usually around 70 Deg C when the temperature readings disappear. Then, to fix, I just cycle the key from Run --> OFF --> Run, and then everything comes back to life.

Quite frustrating.

Almost seems like there is a connection issue somewhere or a brief high resistance (maybe) in the circuit.

Intermittent **** is the worst. Almost better for it to just go out. At least then you would have a definite answer.

Problem Resolved!
I did a number of things to try and fix this problem. I'm not exactly sure what "activities" fixed the problem. I'll list them all for your reference.
- I was hoping to reach down and remove the temperature sensor. However, it was so far down that I couldn't remove the sensor. Instead, I simply grabbed the wiring connection and massaged the wiring connection. I gave a gentle tug, pushed in slightly, and then flexed the connecting wiring back and forth.
- I disconnected the negative battery cable.
- I then attempted to disconnect both of the wiring harnesses that plug into the PCM. Unfortunately, I broke the "locking" lever on the harness closest to the windshield. This harness was not removed.
- However, I was able to successfully remove the wiring harness closest to the front radiator. I removed the harness, inspected the pins, and all were fine. So I simply plugged the harness back into the PCM, and secured the locking mechanism.
- I'm not sure what activity actually fixed the problem, but the problem is now fixed. I have not had an intermittent coolant temperature reading fail since performing these tasks.

Who knows, maybe disconnecting the battery may have rebooted the PCM module and that's all that was required.
I hope this information may be helpful to others.
