I could use some help trying to ascertain what a min, normal range and max oil pressure might be.
I'm not relying on the idiot gauge in the dash.
I have a banks 0-100 psi sending unit mounted on the top of the filter housing.
I was getting 0.2 psi at idle and 112 psi at 2000 psi. No doubt that sending unit is goofed.

So I began troubleshooting and bought a mechanical oil pressure testing gauge to see what that would read.
I'm getting 51 psi at idle and 77 psi at 2000 rpm.
Does that seem normal for where I am taking the reading? Engine has 92K.

Very interested in getting some definitive numbers for:
Minimum:_
Normal Range:_
Maximum:_

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Much in advance....

Both those readings, 51 at idle and 77 at 2000 rpm seem high to be realistic unless you have a high pressure oil pump installed.

I guess it depends on a couple of things…. Oil pump, oil viscosity, oil filter, etc.
Assuming you have a 5.7 Hemi (you didn’t say) it varies from truck to truck.

With 5w20 and a standard mopar filter I get about 26 psi and hot idle and 48 psi hot at 70 mph. Other folks get 24-35 at idle and 45-55 at 70 mp, depending on the oil whether 5w20 or 5w30 or 0w40 or ????? Those seem typical.

The 51 and 77 you’re getting seem unusually high but some guys hit those numbers with a large filter and 5w40 oil.

I agree those are high, so I took some new readings this morning coz the readings I took yesterday was before I got the truck up to operating temps. Here is what I got now. I would be interested to hear what you guys think about these numbers.

Do they still seem high and if so, what might be the cause? What should maximum oil pressure be?
The book doesn't really say. It says 10 PSI Minimum, 20-30 PSI @ Idle and above 30 PSI @2000 RPM.

Idle (750 RPM) - Eng Temp 130°F = 55 PSI
Idle (750 RPM) - Eng Temp 140°F = 45 PSI
Idle (750 RPM) - Eng Temp 155°F = 37 PSI
Then, took it out for a drive to get the engine temp up to normal operating temp.
Idle (750 RPM) - Eng Temp 190°F = 24 PSI
Park 2000 RPM - Eng Temp 190°F = 70 PSI

@zogg - It's a 5.9 Cummins. Thanks..
@Tuscon - No high pressure oil pump that I'm aware of.

Also, I'm currently running Rotella T4 15W-40 Synthetic HD oil.

Thanks very much for the comments/advice.

I hate to throw a monkey wrench into this discussion, I use Rotella T4 15W-40, but it is not synthetic, according to my information Rotella T6 is their synthetic oil.
Apologies if I'm wrong.

I would call those well within the normal range for motor, revs and viscosity. I have never found oil pressure to vary a lot by synthetic or dino oil at the same viscosity from the same maker.

From Shell: {Shell Rotella® T4 Triple Protection 15W-40 uses a proprietary, synthetic blend formula exclusive to Shell.} I did not know it was a synthetic blend until I looked it up... I'm surprised some have not tried the new Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic Multi-Vehicle 5W-30 Diesel Engine Oil as it's API SN for gas engines...

Thanks for the info, was unaware that T4 was a blend.

My 13 5.7 Ram oil pressure at star is 62, drops to 60 when warm and as I leave to drive jumps up to high 60s almost 70. After long drive and going around 40 mph and truck is in higher gear like 5, will sit steady at 42.
