I have a 2013 stock dodge ram express 1500 and can't decide what exhaust system to choose whether magnaflow catback or borla catback.. Any suggestions?

Magnaflow sounds very nice on these trucks

I agree. I have Magnaflow on mine and it has an oldschool rumble during acceleration and its pretty quiet when cruising. My MDS is disabled so there is no drone whatsoever but even with it on, there was minimal drone at highway speeds.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I 'm saving my pennies for the bolt on Mufflex : a Magnaflow muffler in 14, 18, or 24 " already welded up to stainless steel pipe to exactly replace the Ram factory muffler without welding.

Yeah, you pay a lot for Borla, but what stainless series do they use. I know Magnaflow's pipes will surface rust over time. It's not horrible, but they do rust slightly.

Personally, I'd go with Magnaflow.

Mufflex 14, 18, or 24. the numbers stand for the inches of the magnaflow muffler. I'm pretty happy with my 18. Very nice around town, some drone at 55-65 on the highway but only when the truck is under a bit of load. Honestly, I'd love to hear what the 24 sounds like. I know 14 would have been too loud for me.

I would highly reccomend considering a Mufflex Magnaflow replacement muffler kit.
The factory piping / tips are perfectly fine for most people.

They are decently priced, and are very easy to install (the newer the truck, the easier the install).

Just my opinion, but there isn't really a reason for a full 'cat back' on the Gen IV Rams.

I am a big Magnaflow fan myself. For the money, you are going to get the same performance, quality, and great sound that you would get from the more expensive Borla kits. The 5" tips in the Magnaflow catback look amazing as well...

I am going with the Magnaflow since I have it on my Challenger but I also want headers and Y pipe. I can't believe how small and flattened the y pipe is. Any suggestions on headers?

You have a few choices for headers. The best performing setup is going to be the ARH longtubes. These come with a 3" mandrel bent y-pipe and high flow cats. It is also designed to clamp onto the existing exhaust as well as all the aftermarket catback systems, so there is no welding required. Many guys are seeing upwards of 30hp/30tq from the headers alone.

The next option would be a set of shorty headers, but you will then need to modify the stock y-pipe as shorties are designed to bolt up to the factory y-pipe. The shorties are typically worth about 12-15hp/tq.

They list 2, 1 3/4 and 1 7/8. Which ones do most go with? Bigger one loses torque right?

Correct. I would stick with the 1 3/4". The 1 7/8" are more designed for guys with boost or nitrous as they will give more top end power, but cause a loss of low end power.

How restrictive would the 1 3/4" become if you desided to boost down the road?

The 1 3/4" headers still move a ton of air, so I would still be comfortable with them on a boosted application. UNBROKEN has a blown 2012 with every performance mod available, and he is also running the 1 3/4" ARH headers.

How difficult is the header install? I helped my husband install headers on the Viper but it was a breeze.

This seems to be awkward since it is too tall to lay flat but not tall enough to sit up or stand without a lift. What do you guys do?

Easiest way to install headers on these trucks is to sit in the front fender. Just remove the wheels, pull up a chair, and go to work. It is about a 4 hour job, but it is doable if you have any sort of mechanical background. With you guys having already installed headers in the past, you shouldn't have any trouble.

Bolts easy to get to, any special wrenches?

Ratcheting wrenches are nice to have as well as a few different length extensions for the ratchet. Otherwise, you don't need any specialty tools.
