I have the dreaded exhaust tick. I have the stock exhaust. If I buy a set of headers, would I need a different exhaust or does it bolt up to the factory exhaust? I have a 2014 ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi

From what I've seen, there are direct replacement headers that bolt up to your factory collector pipe (where the exhaust pipe bolts to your manifolds). I have a set of shorties on my 09 that bolts directly up to my factory pipes. Granted, mine are a really huge PITA if you are trying to take them off with the heads on the truck. The factory ones are easy to get off just expect a broken bolt or 2. Easiest way i've found is to weld a nut and a washer to the broken stud and it should come right out. They are aluminum heads so you won't have any issue about accidently leaving a couple tacks on the heads themselves. These below are what are on my hemi now. Like I mentioned hard to unbolt with the head on the truck so when I did my cam job I left them bolted on and it gave me an extra go handle when pulling the heads so I'll take it.

Of course you mean behind the headers, it will or it wont, no big deal anyway. Shorty or long tubes, if you get long tubes you will need some work, some shorty's might bolt up. If you want something badass, look at exhaust cut outs, they are cheap and with a press of the valve you bypass muffler, hehe.

search shorties with oem fit and make sure legal in your area, I say that because in CA only a few are CA legal.

From the options we offer, Shorties will bolt up to the factory y pipe and long tubes include a y pipe and will bolt up to the factory catback. These will be fully bolt on solutions with no fab work or additional parts needed.

You mean taking the factory manifold off with the head on the truck is a PITA?

In NY where I’m from, now it’s illegal to modify the exhaust and can not have cut outs. I was looking at flowtech shorty headers from JEGS and I wasn’t sure if most shorties would bolt right up or if I would have to change the whole exhaust for it to bolt up

Sorry, the after market headers were a pain. I didn’t replace them, the previous owner did. I’ve seen and been told the stock header is fairly easy to take off since it’s essentially in a straight line unlike the bbk headers which I have that have ridiculous bends I assume to make them equal length. The stock headers shouldn’t be too bad just worst part would be any broken studs but mentioned before pretty easy to weld a nut on top of the stud and unscrew it out. I’m no good at welding what so ever but now that I’m remembering it was for a valve cover bolt I had broken on the rear of the head. No room for a drill or anything to pull it out with.

I did powergo sports ebay shorties and they bolt right up. Get remflex gaskets and some permatex exhaust sealant for the collector sealing. You will need to unbolt the steering U joint to make room on the driver side. 1 bolt on each header (top middle ish) is a PITA to get in bc its blind.I did my headers before they snapped bc I didn't want to deal with getting broken studs out.

Depending on your skill set getting the broken stud/studs out will be the biggest challenge. Driver side is harder than the passenger side but they do go in.

Only negatives besides getting a good seal on the collector is the engine/exhaust gets noiser due to the thinner material of headers vs thick cast iron manifolds. So you will hear the exhaust pulsing/engine noise through the headers that was normally quiet. Another option is to have the warped manifold milled or sanded flat, then put it back on with remflex gaskets (do both to be safe) and this is your easiest option if you can find a place to do the milling/sanding.

guys; FNG here.
Is this tick common? Is it all the time because I have heard a tick but it kind of needs a controlled environment to hear it.
Most noticeable when coasting in a place that echoes (like in the Ted Williams Tunnel when going into Boston). I hear it but when I take it to my mechanic he can't hear it (honestly I don't hear it most of the time on regular roads). Is this the same tick?
