I am kicking around the idea to upgrade my stock radio. I have an 18 Express with the 5" (?) headunit now.

Options I am thinking about:
1) Double Din aftermarket radio
2) factory 8.4 radio.

Main things I would like to add- Navigation and bigger display.

Things I have now and need to keep - Backup camera, hands-free, Sirius.

Now, I know there are ways to do both, but I am unsure of what I would all need for both. Which is more cost effective/economical? Which is most beneficial in long run?

I was pretty experienced with working with stereos in the late 90s-early 2000s. I also was a mechanic in the Navy, so I can turn a wrench, so not scared to dig into something.

For resale, clean look, etc I am leaning towards the factory unit. But, then being more budget minded it seems like an aftermarket unit may be cheaper?

I plan on a small upgrade to the stock speakers and possibly a small amp/ 1 sub setup, probably a 10".

Go aftermarket and get car play and use yours phone maps. Better features, better display, better sound, cheaper, = aftermarket.

Mods don’t add value to a vehicle unless that person is willing to pay in addition too. Return to stock and sell your cd later when the time comes.

I’m a huge Pioneer fan! Check out their NEX series.with the right adapters everything will still work, (Maestro adapter, Uram)

I would go aftermarket. I’m looking at the Kenwood 9905s. I agree with PurpleRT, use CarPlay/Android Auto for maps unless you do a lot of driving in areas with no cell coverage. Even then, a handheld Garmin unit would probably be superior to the OEM NAV which sucks.

I had the same dilemma but just couldn't bite the bullet for the upfront cost of the OEM route, so I went aftermarket.
Whenever I see the nice 8.4 upgrades, I do get a little jealous of the bigger screen and all that, but I love all the features and capabilities of aftermarket. That being said, I have probably spent more in the aftermarket route than if I had initially went 8.4 but I also have completely overhauled my audio system twice

So what is all needed then for aftermarket? Obviously the HU and dashkit. What wire harnesses? What do I need to still have the backup lines like now if that's possible (only ask cause I see they are missing the provided pic)?

Also, I assume it will be easier to add an amp/sub or expand even more with aftermarket. I am used to pretty built up systems so maybe one 10 isnt going to cut it for me after a while. :);)

Go to Crutchfield and enter your vehicle info. Their system is pretty good about telling you what else you’ll need.

Yes, aftermarket will ABSOLUTELY make it easier to build out in the future.

There's the metra wiring harness. And then to retain stock vehicle functions I grabbed a iDatalink maestro and then there's a usb hub adapter to keep the USB and aux from the factory location

I also use metraonline to find the wiring harness and dash kit. Then I grab it from a local audio store that is just filled with all the different metra stuff. Although if you use the Maestro, I believe you just need their harness

is your backup camera in the mirror or the head unit? I want to upgrade my radio as well and have my video moved down to the radio.

Was looking in Crutchfield and came up with this.

What else will I need and where should I look?

I believe that pretty much covers everything you need. I see the Maestro, the wiring harness, the usb hub replacement, radio adapter, dash kit, and screws.
You could use that as your part list and try and shop around to find cheaper prices which shouldn't be too difficult. But if you don't mind paying a little more for one stop shopping, that should take care of it

You’ll need an XM receiver if you want to keep satellite radio.

Hey guys. Here is something I'd be giving a hard look at. At first glance it looks pretty slick.

I dont know where to get it, how much it costs, or who makes it. I'm not affiliated in any way to the youtuber. I just like his headlights and taillights. YouTube suggested the headunit videos to me and I thought it's worth a look. I think he has an install video and this update video.

I'm sure something could be done about the xm radio as an add-on device.
