I rented a trailer over the weekend, great little ma and pa place that I rent from, but this time they looked under my truck to see what the rating was for my hitch. Told me it was 7,500 hitch - which was fine for what I was doing. I was surprised, and didn't think to ask how they determined that by looking at it.

I have a 2017 Laramie Crew Cab 4X4 Hemi with 3.92. Pretty sure it said class IV hitch but now I can't recall?

So question to the group, what is the rating of the factory receiver on our RAM trucks? 10,000? 7,500? Something else entirely?

Thanks all

If memory serves me correctly the factory Class IV is rated to 1000/10K direct 1200/12K with a WDH. You'll run out of truck before you run out of hitch

I should have added, there is a factory Class III that's rated for 600/6K direct and 1000/10K with a WDH. How you tell if it's the Class III, look for a bolt through the bumper and bolts on the back side near the receiver tube.

Thanks Crash, I will crawl under and look. I think I have the window sticker somewhere too. 99% sure it said class 4

edit- found window sticker, says class 4. I assume that means 10,000 pounds?

That is correct, it rated for slightly more when used with a WDH.

Might want to keep your window sticker in the glove box in case you rent from somewhere else. They may try to tell you your hitch is underrated for the trailer you are trying to rent.

Yep.... many people overlook that.... you'll need a forged ball mount and a 1.25" shank on the ball to have a true 10,000 pound hitch.

I'm limited to 8,000 pounds because that is what my 2 inch ball is rated at.... the forged ball mount is rated for 17,000, the hitch is rated for 11,000.... the truck is rated for 10,448 by the factory.

8,000 is all I ever want to put behind it anyway.

Forged receivers aren't cheap!

I believe it cost me right at $100 for a 17,000 pound ball mount and a 2 inch ball with a 1.25" shank.

The ball mounts are usually 5500 - 6000 pounds for the welded ones, the only way to get the full use of the system is to get the 15,000 - 17,000 pound ball mounts.

There may be someone selling 10,000 pound ball mounts, but I didn't find any locally.

+15K lbs behind a 1500?, maybe behind a 2500/3500 but those come with a Class V receiver. The factory Class IV receiver is good for more than you'll want behind a 1500.
Check out eTrailer there is a bunch of 10K rated draw bars/ball mounts available in multiple configurations, colors and materials.

No.... not 15k behind a 1500, lol.

I just meant to get to use the whole 10,448 pounds my truck is rated for I had to get the big ball mount.

I was shopping local at the time, and wanted a forged ball mount.

They were looking at either the rating of the ball itself, or the ball mount. 7,500 lbs. is a pretty common rating of a 2" ball with a 1" shank. You can get a 2" ball rated around 10k but it will be a 1 1/4" shank, or one that is only rated around 3,500 lbs. with a 3/4" shank. If you go to someplace like Walmart and look at a lot of the ball mounts they sell they are only rated for 5,000 lbs.

Thanks everybody - I think I will print the window sticker and toss it in the truck. The ball I have is rated for 10,000 pounds - it is 2 5/16th for pulling a horse trailer.

And thanks chri5k - I will avoid those balls for my truck ;)

they actually looked at the hitch it self - The ball says 10,000 pounds right on top.

Not the end of the world as I was renting a sub 3,000 pound 2 horse trailer, but will keep a print out of the window sticker with my owners manual going forward.
