I recently rebuilt my 9.25 LS rear differential and filling it only took 4.4 pints where capacity specs are anywhere from 4 pints to 4.9 pints - depending on the source.

It's the Chrysler 9.25 LS:
DMHP 3.92 Rear Axle Ratio
DRBS Corporate 9.25 LD Rear Axle
DSAP Anti-Spin Differential Rear Axle

2003 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 Quad-Cab, 5.7 Hemi

What's the "proper" capacity?

Technically the proper capacity is fill till it seeps out the fill hole. Anything mechanical will have some variations.
