So I think my passenger (and maybe driver) side front cv axle is going bad on my 2013 ram 1500 4wd quad cab. Seems that both front ahafts are exactly the same part. Ive never replaced one and am looking for aome experience with this. I hear a metal clicking sometimes and also a dull hum, more so when turning right. I checked I joints and all seem solid with no play. The front shafts have some play and looks like one joint pass side has quite a bit of all around play in it. Anyone ever replace these? How hard is it? I scheduled an appt for this wed to have a garage take a look.

Glad you wrote this

I am getting a rumble too on my 2014. 89k miles. Sounds like a knobby tire but my all terrains aren't that aggressive. Only when turning right, sometimes when slowing down.

I hate arguing with dealer so I hope it gets worse before my warranty is up

Check the wheel hub. That's exactly the noise mine made before I replaced it.

I may replace the wheel hib also, but there is definite looseness in the cv shaft. I grabbed it and it made metal sounding noise, similar to what I hear sometimes when driving.

If you end up needing a wheel hub assembly they are priced all over the place from as little as $70 a hub all the way up to $220 a hub. I saw zero advantage from one to the next. I'm familiar with timken since they provide OEM parts to the manufacturer.

The the reason your axle is loose is because it is splined into the the hub assembly. If the hub is moving it will cause the axle to move. ;)

A bad bearing isn't always going to have play. Lift it in the air hold the spring and spin the tire if it feels smooth and there is no play chances are the bearing is fine. If it's bad you will feel the roughness while you spin it

I did both of mine. It’s not hard if you have the right tools. YouTube is your friend. Watch as many as you can. I did shafts hubs rotors and pads for less then $500 I think. It took 2 days. First side took all day because I never did it before. The other side took about 2-3 hrs.

Same boat as you my friend :D. I just took a wire brush to my brake calipers and pads to clean them up. I was shocked with 78k that I still have almost 50% pad left. I thought I needed new ones.

For those with hub problems did you have any unusual tire wear?

I did not. I rotate my tires often and discount tire does a great job of balancing them. 50000 miles on G2 terragrapplers with plenty of tread left.

Just updating this thread, it ended up being my pass side hub bearing. Replaced and is quiet and smooth as ever. That hub was seized on there so bad, had to take a 2x4 and wedge it between old rotor I put on and the frame. Turn steering wheel and finally broke loose. Now waiting for driver side to go lol
