So I mentioned this in my intro thread, but thought I'd start a new one to ask this.

The dealer said they might not be able to get the 32 gal fuel tank in my 2016 order, but was able to get everything else I wanted (missed order deadline, but they were able to make changes to an existing truck they had in queue).

Anyway, I had wanted the larger fuel tank, but wondering if the extra six gallons is worth refusing this truck and waiting for a 2017 so I can order it as I want it. Truck will be 2016 1500 Crew Cab Laramie 5.7.

I have no problem waiting for the 2017, dealer says they will be able to order them very soon. I'm just wondering if I'm making a stand on something that is worth it, or should I compromise on the larger tank to get a truck possibly a couple of months sooner.

How are you guys doing with similar trucks with the smaller tank?

Thanks in advance for any insight on this...

I have the 32 gallon tank and wouldn't want the smaller tank. I think it would require an annoyingly frequent fill up.. Especially if you tow you're going to want the extra capacity. I actually wouldn't mind another 8 gallons or so.

I love the 32 gallon tank. Had smaller tanks on other trucks (22-26 gallon range), and disliked the more frequent fill-ups. The 32 was a definite requirement when I was searching for my 2013 and, after that was totaled, my 2014.

Mines not fully broken in yet, but I've gotten about 350 miles out of each of my first two tanks. Roughly 50/50 highway and city. All I know is that my 26 gallon tank holds fuel just fine.

I drive about 20,000 miles a year. The 32 gallon was a must for me. Some of the places I work I would have to fill up every other day where now I can do it every 3rd. If you don't drive that much the 26 would probably be aright. Go to the dealer and see what they will do as far as installing the 32 gallon when the truck is delivered if you really want it.

Thanks for the input guys. I drive about 25K a year and my Jeep GC has a 24 gallon tank in it and it does ok, but the ram will get a little less mpg so figured I'd be filling up even more with it so wanted the bigger tank. I got the impression from the dealer that it was not easy to change the tank after the fact, but will check that out again with someone else.

25k is a good amount of miles in a year. If you were to drive till tanks were dry its a 90mile difference or so which can add up quick. But real world from other tank threads i have read shows that the 32 gallon tank when filling up when gauge is 0 that your only gettin 26-27 gallons in it and for the 26 they are getting 24 or so into it so ends up being more like 30-50 miles..

Personally i like the bigger tanks just makes life easier for trips.

I'm pretty sure the 32 gallon is a direct swap and the computer will recognize the additional fuel

That is a good point, the usable difference seems to be more like 3 gallons. So less of a compromise.

That would be good, I'll check it out further. Although I wonder what the cost would be to do it afterwards compared to ordering it that way.

Not sure what you are ordering but if it's a 1500, you should get 17-20 mpg on the highway. That is 400 or so miles on the 26 gal. tank. If you lived in Montana, the 32 might be worth the wait but in Mass. I think the gas stations are fairly close together. On long trips in my 14 Sport 1500, my coffee consumption controls the stops not the fuel capacity. I stop a lot more driving locally for things other than fuel also.

Is there also a price issue with the 17 vs 16 if you wait? Earlier posts on the forums show that the conversion to the 32 gal. tank is also not inexpensive so good luck on your decision.

Why can't they order the 32? They are probably bull****ting for some stupid reason.

The 26 is ok, that's a 300+ mile range which is normal vehicle range, and people ******** about filling up this often... wow.

I have the 32 though because I tow, and it's *actually* annoying to have to fill up while towing (especially when it's horses).

^ I really wish this was something I looked at on my 14 2500 6.4- really really wished the damn thing had a 32 - 36 gallon tank. Only has a 26. I have to stop a lot more often for fuel.

I think the problem is that I missed the order deadline. So they were making changes to an existing order they already had in the system and the factory told them they will accept all the changes but the fuel tank. Not sure if they are just out of the 32's or what. But they are going to make a call and see if it can be done rather than just take the computers word for it. Hopefully will know within a day or so. Then I will need to make my decision.

Well there are a couple of different reasons for wanting the larger tank. One is that I don't want to stop at every gas station even if there are enough. When driving around home I'd rather get an extra day or so before having to fill up. And seeing as I don't just drive in eastern MA, I frequently drive to NH, ME, VT, CT, etc... and would be nice not to have to stop as often. I know it's not a huge difference in weight, but every extra bit of weight helps in the snow.

I tow more than anyone else I know and drive 120 miles round trip to work. Most my riding adventures are roughly 5hrs of driving round trip. 26 gallon tank has been doing pretty amazing. There have been a few times I wished I had the 32 just out of convenience. But I've never actually needed it. Gas stations are proportioned close enough you can make it there up here. When driving to work I average 22 mpg though so that helps. 50K on my truck in a year and a half.

Sure it is 26 gallon? My 2015 and the 2016 list the 31 gallon tank as standard on the 2500's.

I understand, and am not saying I can't live without the 32. Just that if I have to wait for an ordered vehicle, it would be nice to get it exactly the way I want it. And without any doubt, the 32 would be more convenient. I'm just trying to find out by others' experiences, just how much more convenient it will be.

I commute about 80 miles a day round trip. I wish I had the larger tank so I don't have to fill up once a week. By Thursday on my way home, it is time to fill up.
